With an incredibly heavy heart, I must bear the news that we had to put down our beloved kitty, Athena, yesterday morning.
While this breaks my heart, as he was only a year and a half old, what breaks my heart even more is why he had to be put down. He ingested rat poison from the neighbors place.
First, let me say it was not done maliciously. The neighbors are older, had a rat problem, and didn't know that it would cause harm to our animals by putting rat poison down. I do not blame them, as it is not their fault.
We are extremely lucky that Athena ended up bringing the poison home and leaving it on the front step. But not many people will be so lucky.
Rat poison is deadly to cats, dogs, owls, ect, even in a small dosage. It shuts down their brain and ends up paralyzing them from the waist down, slowly and painfully.
Athena's death is so heartbreakingly sad, and I miss him terribly, but it was a warning. Please do not use rat-poison, I beg of you. Be vigilant when letting pets outside.
There is no antidote for rat-poison now a days. There used to be, but the formula was changed so it wouldn't harm people, toddlers, that got their hands on it. But it's now lethal to animals with the right amount.
Please be vigilant, be aware, don't use rat-poison. Not only is it inhumane to rats and mice as it takes 3-5 days for it to work and slowly kills them, it's deadly to not just cats and dogs and even chickens, but owls, foxes, coyotes, ect, whatever eats it, or eats what eats it. If you must rid of rats or mice, use traps. It's fast and humane.
While this is a memorial to Athena, this is also a warning. Please be careful, and keep your furry and even feathered babies safe <3

Rest easy now, Theensie. You'll always live in our hearts. You were truly an angel without wings, and truly one of a kind, my little buddy.

I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet kitty- what a beautiful baby. @Cluckcluck1215 , just remember the great times you shared together and remember the love of that little fur ball! I know it's hard to lose an animal friend, but sometimes smiling over old photos and thinking about funny moments really helps. Thank you for sharing this warning to others.

I can say from working at a veterinary clinic, it's really hard to know until it's too late with rat poisons. We had a family bring in all of their dogs immediately because they had put out rat poison and suddenly it was gone and they thought it was a dog who got it. They were correct, and after inducing vomiting in every single one they finally got the last dog to get it up. This was a very lucky case. Considering cold temperatures, antifreeze is other thing to watch out for.

I try. I know now that he was only meant to be here for a short time, and that he's healthy and painfree now.

Honestly? I would have never known he ate rat poison if he didn't bring it back. I mean, what cat brings home rat poison, y'know? Only him, I guess! It appeared he had some the day before, which is most likely why the symptoms showed up quicker then my vet and I anticipated, as I found green dust on my walkway. But I thought it was frosting from my sisters birthday cake a few days previous that someone had tracked out, or it fell out of the trash or something. Would never have guessed.
Yes, antifreeze is something else to watch out for. Now I'm keeping my two remaining kitties inside to be safe (they never ventured out as much as him anyway), but it's definitely something to look out for.
Those dogs are lucky, not only because they were able to be saved, but because they have such attentive owners. I know plenty of people who wouldn't bother or notice, so it's nice to see.
