~ Retired and Starting My Future In The Foothills ~

A long time ago I had a rehab bunny for a friend of mine (bunny had been in a cage with guinea pigs - who apparently are not very nice to bunnies, especially when it's only 1 bunny vs. more than 1 guinea pig). I had the bunny in the bathroom with a litter box while it recuperated - the set up worked great, except that the bunny chewed. A lot. But was easily housetrained to the box. Still love bunnies - have 2 now

Finally got time to read this thread, what a SAGA! We were fortunate enough to get a house far out in the country. I can shoot guns, raise chickens, horses, goats, whatever. According to county ordinance my lot can accomodate 2 livestock units. A unit is equal to a horse, 50 chickens, 2 goats, 2 cow etc. My neighbors love the chickens, more so now that I am down to one rooster.

Noticed your electrical issues. Hate to see you have a fire in your new slice of heaven, and sounds like you're living a little dangerously with those outlets/splitters and ext. cords. I'm an amateur electrician-I know enough to be dangerous. The best solution for you would be to have an electrician convert your outlets to 3 prong, GFIC protected outlets. It won't be that expensive. A dedicated circuit for your incubator and accessories would be best. Anything that powers a heater should be on a dedicated 30 amp outlet. If a $300 electric job isn't in your budget, outlets arent that hard to update yourself. buy the outlet with the GFIC trip built in, shut down power to the outlet (test with a lamp, tape the breaker closed) and just follow the directions and connect the wires to the proper poles. If you have old 2-wire cable in your wall, you will have to run a separate ground to the 3rd neutral pole. If an exterior wall it might be easier to install a ground rod outside and punch the ground wire through to inside. A better more permenant solution would be to run modern 3 phase romex to the next grounded outlet , using the old wire to pull the new through, replacing the old 2 wire junk. If you have old knob and post wiring, the whole works should be re-wired.

....Speaking of projects..... John has already got the "change put the front porch outside outlets to 3-prong outlets" on the list of tasks to get to, so I might as well add the two interior outlets which need to be changed to GFi what's-its.

And I am coming home with a rescue kitty today. There's been a pretty tortoise-shell cat hanging around the department's Telecom Warehouse since July. She has slowly been tamed by our Warehouse folks, but it's kind of obvious she wasn't totally feral. I bet she was dumped. Fridays are my Warehouse duty days until 3 p.m., and the solo gal working at the warehouse full time talked me into taking the cat.

I think I'll buy a hutch, rather than commission John to build one for the rabbit. Bradshaw Feed is pretty much on my way home, and I know there are hutches there. I also need rabbit pellets, bedding, and some more cat food. Time for more chicken feed and pine shavings, too.

OMG I work off of Bradshaw road and was planning at stopping there on the way home to check it out! Lol! What time are you going to be there? I would love to meet you and your rescue kitty!

Bradshaw Feed is open until 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, which allows me to swoop in there between 6:10 and 6:25 if there isn't too much traffic between HQ and there.

I work from 7:30 a.m. To 5:30 p.m. Even without stops for shopping, I seldom get home before 7 p.m. If I time it right and the traffic gods look favorably upon me, I can handle feed store shopping during the week after work and not have to come Down The Hill on my weekends.

Look for a charcoal grey- and dirty!- Toyota RAV4 with a BYC bumper sticker!

Aw shoot. I get off work at 4:30 and I work about 5 minutes from the feed store. So I will be long gone before you arrive. But we should definitely coordinate sometime! Next time you go I'll just tell Jamison that I gotta check out hutches for the rabbits we don't have... for three hours....

Oh, wait until you go in there in the spring when the chick bins are full! They have the most awesome set-up in there for their chicks. We love Bradshaw Feed, though it's kinda far for us now. We have switched our flock to a different feed & buy from a local feed supply place up here near where we live (which is near where Linda lives). We still go to Bradshaw for lots of stuff we can't find locally, though, and sometimes just to go say hi. During "chick season", we do stop in there every-so-slightly-more-frequently LOL.

Well, say hi to Amy (blonde gal) and Connie, one of the managers.

Amy has purchased chicks and fertile eggs from me, when her hens went broody. The chicks she bought were Cochins I had hatched, because Bradshaw doesn't sell Cochins even during chick season. Dunno why. She's also given my name and number (with my permission) to folks looking for fertile eggs to hatch when their kids choose incubating eggs for school science projects. If they don't care what breed hatches, then eggs from my flock are perfect for that purpose.

Hhandbasket is right, though - the BEST time to visit Bradshaw Feed is between Valentine's Day and Columbus Day, when they have chicks.
