~ Retired and Starting My Future In The Foothills ~

Don't really have to downsize, actually - that first post of mine immediately after the hearing (on my iPad in the parking lot) was in reaction to the Hearing Officer's suggestion to "tone down my operation.". Plus the fact that there could still be a nuisance complaint for the rooster noise.

I have divested myself of some roosters and 3 more will be going bye-bye shortly.

Came home from work in the dark last night to discover a dead pullet in my driveway up by the house.... So I have ordered a 4 camera home surveillance system with a DVR recorder. Could have been a dog, but there was only slight "damage" which maybe coulda been caused by flock-mates once she was down. I dunno. But I want to be able to review activity on my property!

And I WILL post "this property under video surveillance" signs, too!

I believe - could be wrong - but I seem to recall that in CA you must post a surveillance sign if you have your property under surveillance.
Good luck, and I'm really sorry about your pullet.

Yup, this is true. But I'm not gonna just have window stickers, I want a sign to post at all three gates.

Thank you for the condolence - the ONLY saving grace is that it was one I hadn't named yet. If it had been one of the named girls, or one of my favorites (shhhhhh, we don't say that very loud), I would have been both livid AND heart-broken. I'm just sad and suspicious right now.

Darn Linda that sucks muddy water

Did you check her good for pellet or bb's or the like. Poor girl. I've lost 2 this last week also and it doesn't get easier seeing the little innocents in that way.

And yes, we ALL wish to know so get those pics up

poor girl. Sorry for your loss, it sucks when ever you lose one. In a way i hope it was the the complainer, i mean neighbor across the street, just so you could get back at him, but then i hope it was just natural causes, cause if it is "the complainer" then who knows what he would do next ya know. Ya you better "NOT" be on byc at work, thats a big no no, (if your caught.)

OMG I really hope it wasn't your neighbor who killed her! That's the work of a crazy person right there if so. Strange that a predator would kill a chicken, barely damage it, and then leave it in your driveway....

No, I have not found her. There is still some hope she could be broody in the gully in amongst all the periwinkle...

She's about 8 months old, so the timing is right for her to start laying.

Whenever this stuff happens, it's during the day, because everybody but 4 or 5 (Hitchcock, Albert, Amy, Clara and sometimes Elizabeth, who roost on the porch railing at night) are locked up in the coop. Chickens, ducks and geese. I am really pleased the ducks put themselves away in the coop so I don't have to herd 'em.

Only 8.5 months to retirement.

I felt real pleasure at seeing your note that you will retire in 8.5 months! I retired a few years ago, and I do NOT understand people who say they are "bored" in retirement, have "nothing to do", want to go back to work to "keep busy". I am a nurse, and I NEVER wanted to go back to work once I had retired! There is SO much to do--things to make or build, plants to grow, birds and animals to feed, care for, play with and enjoy--I never get done each day what I have planned, so it spills over into the next day.

I can't imagine being bored. It sounds like you have your little piece of heaven right here on earth and not too long to wait until you can enjoy it full time!
