Then at some point during the week of christmas vaca when the kids are on my nerves, we put the now empty and mangled tree outside, set it back up and decorate it for the birds.
pine cones rolled in peanut butter and bird seed
strings of popcorn
any brightly colored yarn bits - birds line their nests with them
keeps chidren busy for quite a while - cheers the neighborhood birds up
I started saving the 14 inch pizza boxes we get,and get some from the kids school too.I lay them out in the yard and put mulch over them.Keeps the weeds down good, and I don't have to use as much mulch. Ds also likes to build forts with the boxes, lol.
I have garbage cans or pickle buckets by the rain gutters to collect water. The water was going into underground drainage, but I cut the pipes to save the water above ground.
I compost everything that will rot and is non-toxic.
I do garbage drive bys and think," Can I use that?" Usually with chickens in mind.
Last year I got a dozen or more potted plants out of the garbage.Mostly I reuse the pots, and compost the soil, but I did have a few plants grow the next year.Sadly, I saw no pots out this year, but I did get some wooden grape boxes.
