I hate to kill anything also, but that is a personal choice. Many friends are hunters and I have no problem at all with it. I've gone hunting but chose not to shoot an animal, again a personal choice. My father was a police officer so we had guns around the house all the time. To me a gun is nothing more than a tool (yes that is a simplification).

I want to bring my son up with a natural respect and understanding for guns. Your experience this week is a very good example of the proper use of a gun and a good reason why people should be allowed to own them.

From your response it seems it probably pained you some to see that dead coyote and wish it didn't have to happen. However, with all things considered, it was the right thing.

I do feel bad ... knowing the animal was doing what the "population explosion" out here has caused him to do......but, again....us or them....it must be them.......I do feel protecting oneself is a right......and sadly guns are misused by US ,not all of us.........so I agree,we should have the right to bear arms.......and pray the whole time.......that WE choose wisely......... your son is fortunate to have you willing to take the time to educate him and let him make his own choices........ parently certainly isnt easy is it.....

Wow! I'm so glad your son got him! Yes, waaay to close to family, young kids get killed that way.

Not to change the subject, just thought I'd mention the recent posts I've seen about maggots on open wounds of birds left outside. Of course, I don't know how you doctored her, but I would want to keep her inside until the wound heals over. I'm so glad she has survived such a close call!

Hi Becky........I put antibiotic on it ........cleaned it first.......she is up in rabbit hutch since rain stopped.. I have no where to keep her inside,I did have concerns about maggots also.....am going to really watch her closely.would sure hate to lose her........ I so enjoyed her falling asleep while doctoring her today

Congratulations to you son on his marksmanship. Coyotes are pack animals, if there was one, there will be more. Keep the rifle handy.

I think you'll be OK as long as it doesn't get infected. But to be on the safe side, could you bring her inside and put her in a storage container for a few days in a room or closet by herself? You could put a lamp in a closet for her and just put the top on the storage container loosely, so as not to deprive her of air.

I had the "maggot experience" and, trust me, you don't want that to happen to your hen.

Ok, It must be coyote season or something. Yesterday when I got home my neighbor came over and told me a chilling story. Him and his wife were in their living room getting ready to go out for the day around 9:30am, they are retired. The front of my house is completely blocked off by 20 ft bushes so they can see very little. Something caught his eye, he looked over and saw this huge red/orange thing chasing my chickens around and around the house. I live in the woods so visibility is not easy. They thought maybe it was a dog because they could not get a clear view of it. I knew immediately what it was and it is the first time in 30 years I have EVER seen a coyote in broad daylight on my property. I have seen him twice out back and is is huge and is definately red/orange in color with a whitish muzzle. I do not have a gun for fear I would shoot everything in sight but my other neighbor has a 22 he keeps around. We live in what is becoming suburbia, houses are being built faster than plants can grow. So sad as it was such a beautiful, little old farming town but houses are taking up all the places that the wildlife lived. I can't blame them, I really can't. BUT, now this is getting a little to close for comfort. I have 2 small dogs, coyote snack for sure, now I can only take them out on a leash. I have cats,another coyote snack. All my birds are in lockdown today, they are beyond ticked.
When I saw that coyote out back he was paying no mind to my chickens at all which I thought was so weird and when I went out there they have absolutely no fear of humans, none. He finally trotted off into the woods as I got closer to him but he could have cared less.
So the old adage of they only come out at night is no more. As soon as my neighbor left I ran out there to count my birds, my favorite old red hen and two Barred Rocks around 9 weeks old were no where to be found. That coyote could have wiped me out but he didn't and I do not know why. I will assume the bulk of them ran inside the pen but still I consider that a small loss compared to what could have happened.
It is a tough situation, I feel bad for the wildlife as they are being pushed out of their habitats but then again some people have small children etc. playing outside in rural yards and who knows.
Sooo,I do believe in the right to bear arms if need be. I do not know what I am going to do here, I could call animal control but what the heck can she do as they are everywhere and this is the way it goes. Looks like my chickens will be penned. If you could only hear them scraming out there in protest at having to stay in the pen. I am out of work for the next two weeks so will be keeping my eyes peeled. I have three Guineas that will sound the alarm when he comes back which I am sure he will. I am assuming it is a male as he is the biggest coyote I have ever seen.

wow standard,sounds like your visitor was larger than mine, I do think they will become more of a problem for all of us with all the new construction........ they have no where to go ! I am glad you have some time off........you maybe able to drive them away for a while.once they can't snack they move on .......... wishing you the best......
