Reviving an old coop

About the cage. It is a decent size rabbit cage reinforced with chicken wire in a spot that only gets morning sun and even then it's filtered through foliage. I'll update pictures asap. But I do live in the middle of Las Vegas so sun is my biggest predator. I have a cat but she is really really weird and has always taken in baby animals and is seen with our seasonal goslings playing mother. She seems to be fiercely protective of my babies as she won't let anyone who is not me or my fiancé or grandmother near the cage (including the old chihuahua) I won't let her touch them until they are much bigger even though she means well. Is this a common thing? I've never heard of cats getting along with chickens or other birds this well
