Cluck is such a great store- hard to resist buying everything there! Where are you in Barrington? What have you done for a coop? We are about half way through building ours- chickens haven't arrived yet.

Hi from Little Compton I just got a new flock (I have had a flock containing a RI Red, Buff Orpington, Black Coppers Marans, Easter Egger, Red Star and GL Wyandotte in the past but have recently started new). This time around I started with a Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex and Barred Rock...with plans to added a Cream Legbar and Marans or RI Red next month!!! Unfortunately, my SS died unexpectedly yesterday...I have no idea why! So sad, I was most excited about her out of this group. Anyone know of anyone local who has SS pullets?

Hi! I'm from Richmond!
I started a year ago now- I have 2 EE roos, 2 EE hens, 1 Buff Orpinton hen, 2 Australorp hens, a Barred Rock hen, a Dominique hen, 2 Leghorn hens, 2 RI Reds hens, a Silver Laced and a Gold Laced Wyandotte girls, and a Silver Laced Cochin hen. I ordered them all (except the 2 EE roos) online last spring as day old chicks. Every one of them has survived with no illness or injuries, which is surprising, because they escape their enclosure all the time, and roam our yard. Hawks have been a problem with our neighbor's chickens (they had 5, they're down to 2), so I've been very lucky. I recently took in 4 "Silkies" from someone who only bought them to fulfill an order. I think they were from TSC, and may be crossbred, but they're still fluffy, adorable and friendly! I think I have one cockerel, and 3 hens, but they're still young, so it's hard to tell.

I've been waiting for one of my girls to go broody and hatch some eggs. My Barred Rock was in the nesting box today when I was checking for eggs, and she bit at me twice, and growled when I tried to reach under her, so I AM HOPING she will be the one!! She, also, kicked all but 2 of the eggs out of another nesting box earlier today, so maybe that's another sign? I guess we will see!!

If anyone in RI is ever looking to get rid of their birds, and want them to go to a good, happy home, I will take them!! I'm not sure if I want to add anymore Roos right now, because my Alpha is pretty territorial... MAYBE I could try taking one more. I have a separate enclosure, so if I have to keep him separated, it IS doable!

It's nice to see a Rhode Island thread on here!!

Ummm... Not to be a downer, because it sounds like you have a beautiful flock, but roosters are illegal in RI.

That's why I can't keep them. Also, the limit is 6 hens. Unfortunately, we think the 2 birds to the right in my profile picture are roos

Nope! Roos are not illegal in Rhode Island, but they are illegal in certain cities/towns. Also, depending on the town, you need a certain amount of acreage, and they need to be so far from your neighbor's houses to keep them. I made sure I did my research before adopting!

Edit: Just noticed you're from Barrington- Wow, they have QUITE the list of rules for Barrington residents to keep chickens!! That's so disappointing. Not sure if I read this correctly, but did a town official have to approve your construction plans for a coop before you were allowed to build one (or get one, depending on what you did)? And I read something about a FEE?! Yikes!! Down here in Richmond, I could have any number of birds, as long as they're cared for properly, and the area is well kept. I could have an emu if I really wanted!! Lol!

Yeah... unfortunately there are all of these rules. Some official person has to review our chicken coop plans, and we may or may not need a permit. *Note: Do that soon

We also have to have it 20 feet from our neighbor's "dwelling", and we need a chicken permit which costs $25! (And "Complete the enclosed Chicken Hen Registration Application and pay the applicable fee: Please note, this registration is valid May 1st through April 30th and must be renewed annually." !!!) Sorry, I didn't realize that your laws were different. Lucky

I might start a petition. Well, have fun with your chickens! I might be needing to find a new home for some ameraucana probably-roos soon, lest i break the extensive laws

You SHOULD start a petition!! That is CRAZY!! I mean, as long as you're not turning a small backyard into a ridiculous hatchery/egg producing factory, I think you should be allowed as many as you want!! I can't believe they make you pay a yearly fee! The only fee for animals we have to pay, is a yearly one for dog licenses, but it's to prove they've had their rabies shot, because there are a lot of wild animals out here. You should just keep a Roo, and get one of those collars they have for them, so they can't crow as loud!

No one will ever know, and they even have bow ties you can attach to them to be extra dapper! haha
