Hi everyone! I live in Cumberland and got my first chicks about 5 months ago. I have 2 Plymouth rocks and another that I don't know the breed. I am trying to get a couple silkies locally if possible. I found some on websites but the lowest minimum to buy is 6. Does anyone know where I can find some silkies locally? Thanks for any information.
I have a silkie cockerel he is 3 months old. I know this is an old thread but its
Worth a shot! I can’t keep roos.

Hey Yall,

I recently moved to Coventry and just bought 15 chicks from Mcmurray hatcheries website.I am new to the whole chicken thing. Our back yard already had a goat barn and pen and a chicken coop so we are starting with chickens and then in spring time getting goats and maybe a pig but well see... Seeing this is my first time i went with "cool" looking birds over straight egg production but they are all pretty good egg layers from what i read. i wanted a few of each breed so i would have a bunch of different kinds of chickens. I ended up going with Buff orpingtons, silver laced wyandotte, black australorp, new hamshire red, red star, black star, and barred rock and they are sending me a free rare exotic chick from a straight run so well have to see what that could be. I really wanted a golden lace wyandotte but i would have had to put my order on hold for another 3-4 months and i couldnt wait that long so if anyone knows where i could pick up a couple girls that would be cool.
Any interest in a couple bantam cockerels? I have 3 month old golden sebright and white silkie. I can’t have roos. If you know of anyone?
I know this is an old thread but I don’t want them to be anyone’s food!

Oh, yes, they crow at night. The super moon we just had appears to have affected them. They were crowing at 1 a.m. It was so light outdoors. They usually begin crowing ~3 a.m. But this isn't always the case. I wish I could tell you definatively what causes them to crow earlier or later so you could control it. Initially, I thought perhaps it was due to the drop in temperature. Maybe they weren't as comfortable and it makes them wake up earlier some days. Or are the neighbors roosters waking them and I don't hear them crow first. Their's I don't hear unless I am outdoors. I don't worry about it too much because everyone's roosters go off in the morning so theirs are just as guilty. There's no finger pointing going on...it is what it is. For us, it has become a sound we are used to and not bothered by it. A factor to consider is how close to your house would they be? Night time crowing might not be an issue for you or your neighbors. Their coop walls and our house walls plus distance lessons the actual sound heard. It's the quiet of the night so of course something inadvertently can be heard. With that being said, do they also crow during the day. Of COURSE they do! It's not constant but it does happen and does it sometimes seem like a contest is going on to see who can crow the loudest and the longest....yup. But I enjoy my rooster's so I'm okay with it. My closest neighbor who does not have animals of any sort has not complained about the crowing they may do during the day in the wide open. Our roo we named The Rebel used to frequent their property, hence the name The Rebel. I used to apologize profusely but was told it was ok, provided he doesn't poop in their in ground pool. I would be angry too. Plus, I was worried he would dig holes in lawn or flower garden....It didn't occur so....for their inconvenience I leave cartons of eggs at their doorstep with a note from the pullets apologizing for the roo's tendencies. Because this will make it all better....right

This is my short lived experience with roosters. I absolutely love my roosters and was mortified when I realized I had so many. I thought I would need to cull them. I am happy there was an option for them I could try. So far, it has worked in our case. I think for yourself, if there are reservations up front about having them being a nuisance factor, I would refrain from obtaining one. I would hate to have you get one only to find it's not a workable situation and now you either have to cull it or give it away. Especially if you find you like it. Purchase sexed only and save yourself some grief if you decide to increase your flock. Think it over and weigh both sides.

There is a rooster collar that can be used to control crowing but I have no experience with that at all. I don't love the idea of them but I do see where they could be of use and understand the benefits. We do what we need to do.
That's just my thoughts.....the long version. I am not short winded when discussing my chickies

I know this is an old thread but any interest in two bantam cockerels?
I have a white silkie and a golden sebright. Both are raise together since chicks and are a little over 3 months old.
Or know anyone who would want them?
I wish I could keep them but I can’t have roos.

No, I'm inheriting my neighbors chickens as soon as our coop is ready. They are all RI Reds and NH Reds. Were you happy with the chickens you bought? Silkies are so cute. I would like to mix up the breeds next year. Are silkies on the small side? Are they sweet?
Can you have roos where you live?
I have a white cockerel silkie 3 months old. I wish I could keep him but I can’t have a rooster. I also have a 3 month old golden sebright. Raised together from chicks. Got them Straight run From TSC.

We are from Rhode Island but our chickens are just over the CT border.

We've got 8 Silkies, 3 Showgirls, 1 Barred rock, 1 "Easter Egger?", and 8 Red Sex Links.

Been having a lot of fun with our chickens. Very happy to be learning about some other local folks!
Any interest in a white silkie and a golden sebright cockerel? I know this thread is old. I’m trying to find homes for them they are a little over 3 months. I got them straight run at TSC. I can’t have roos. I wish I could keep them I love them. I tried CL but everyone just wants to eat them. And normally I’m ok with that but they are bantams and I love them. :0\

That is great!!
I just had a broody hatch 3 silkies, and 2 easter eggers yesterday. She still has 7 eggs under her, so I'm hoping they're just late hatchers, but maybe not! Hatching eggs is so much fun!
Any interest in a golden sebright and a white silkie cockerel a little over 3 months old both raised together as chicks.
I can’t keep roos.

I might start a petition! I would feel kinda bad, though, with the 'crow collar'. Just like i feel bad putting a crib collar on a horse, although those are kind of unrelated. If I start a petition I will put a link to it here. Let Barrington keep roosters!
LET ALL OF RI KEEP ROOSTERS!
Unless you are directly in Providence city. I can’t see they would be happy. But if you have the yard and space it should be your choice! I wish I could keep my roos!
Anyone want two bantam cockerels? A white silkie and a golden sebright. A little over 3 months old now.

Nope! Roos are not illegal in Rhode Island, but they are illegal in certain cities/towns. Also, depending on the town, you need a certain amount of acreage, and they need to be so far from your neighbor's houses to keep them. I made sure I did my research before adopting!

Edit: Just noticed you're from Barrington- Wow, they have QUITE the list of rules for Barrington residents to keep chickens!! That's so disappointing. Not sure if I read this correctly, but did a town official have to approve your construction plans for a coop before you were allowed to build one (or get one, depending on what you did)? And I read something about a FEE?! Yikes!! Down here in Richmond, I could have any number of birds, as long as they're cared for properly, and the area is well kept. I could have an emu if I really wanted!! Lol!
Do you know all the towns that allow Roos I RI?
If you do could you list them?

Hi everyone, Lincoln here, I have 5 New Hampshire reds and 2 whites silkes. Also have 20 eggs in an incubator in my sons classroom currently with 5 different breeds: black austrolorps, buff orpingtons, speckled Sussex, barred rocks and silver laced wyandottes! Keeping my fingers crossed!! Has anyone hatched before?
Can Lincoln have roosters?

Finally dropped off my rooster today. Couldn't wait any longer, he started to crow this weekend at 9 weeks old. Was a chore catching him in the run. Every time I went to grab him, all the ladies would get between him and me. Guess the girls didn't want to lose their "man".
Where did you take your roo?
I have two bantams I can’t keep. I can’t have cockerels.
