Don't you have to get a queen in the new hive for the bees to take up residence?
Nope. They will do that. When they start building the combs they will bring in queen eggs & raise a new queen. At that point we will need to disengage the hives or the old queen will kill the new one.

Edit: @ this point the new hive is just an extension of the old allowing the hive to expand rather than splitting it. It is very different to honey bees, which is what I originally wanted to do though I was put off by all the equipment needed. Then I looked into flow hives ~ *real* beekeepers hate them. This is where we've started. I was less interested to begin with but am finding it more interesting than I expected.
