Fat Bird came in to have a sit in the nest today. I find this a bit concerning if she doesn't lay an egg, which she didn't. I tend to think the worst that she may have reproductive problems.
However, she's done this a number of times now and every time I've checked her over and kept an eye on her for the next few days and she's been fine. Maybe she just likes to sit on some eggs from time to time.

She laid a few eggs last year, just to show she's not quite past it.Given that she’s 10 and not laid an egg for years I’m guessing, wouldn’t she be long past reproductive issues?
It just never gets old.
That is very cool. I hope it works. This is what we had to do last night:
Remove the landing platform Remove the built up resin @ the entrance [it's super hard] Attach the pipe between the 2 hives Put some of the old resin around the pipe as the scent should let the bees know they're on home ground.View attachment 2129188
When we checked this morning the hive didn't seem active yet but there were a few bees out ~ we assume from last night. John managed to get several to the new entrance. Much excitement so we are hopeful the hive will adjust quickly & the new hive establish.
I find it fascinating. I hope it works for you.Nope. They will do that. When they start building the combs they will bring in queen eggs & raise a new queen. At that point we will need to disengage the hives or the old queen will kill the new one.
Edit: @ this point the new hive is just an extension of the old allowing the hive to expand rather than splitting it. It is very different to honey bees, which is what I originally wanted to do though I was put off by all the equipment needed. Then I looked into flow hives ~ *real* beekeepers hate them. This is where we've started. I was less interested to begin with but am finding it more interesting than I expected.
I would assume so. What could go wrong if there is no egg development?Given that she’s 10 and not laid an egg for years I’m guessing, wouldn’t she be long past reproductive issues?
Very cool Bob.
