When I chose my roo for my flock, I looked for one who was first and foremost kind to the hens. I don't like a rough rooster when they mate. Learning balance at first is one thing, but I had a cockerel who would pin the hens down while he mated with them.
Second was protection, all of the boys watched for things from above, but I also wanted one that watched on the ground.
Third was his interaction with me, I wanted a rooster I could approach and handle if needed. I did not want him to follow me around or be my pet, that's what the hens are for.
I can honestly I succeeded in choosing the right one, Stanley is a very good rooster who is a great protector and gentle leader.
