I'm surprised that prodigal can mean profligate. I had not put those two together until today.

As in the prodigal son. He was the one who took the money and spent it all.

Oh dear. You really didn’t have a theological upbringing!
Neither did I, so I will be going way out over my skis here and say that it is all about showing the unconditional love that the father has for the son and by analogy I assume God has for mankind. Something like that.
