I think it's a mix of things, Bob. She's quite high up the pecking order ~ surprisingly so ~ & we are having a few issues just now with challengers for a higher position. Lavender is one who is asserting herself but roosting, she's usually on that 2nd rail ~ with company. Patricia ]mutant barred rock], Lottie [Wyandotte bantam] & Pebbles[Blue Australorp bantam] sometimes prefer to roost there too & Soda [ my largest Barred Rock is often alone on the 3rd roost ~ so the roosting is a bit flexible anyway. But, & it's a pretty big but, Lavender is something of a klutz. Her size, her weight, her feathering, all work against her & she struggles to get to the higher roosts but being a chook she's social & she wasn't keen on being on her own. She probably went to roost late & couldn't get the space she needs to make that last jump. That's awesome! Does she have issues getting up that high or is this about the pecking order?
I prefer all the girls are partnered up. It used to be always Lottie alone on the lowest roost & I always tucked her in under Lavender who has fluff to spare but being a Frizzle doesn't self regulate her temperature well. So I really don't know.

.... how cute is this....
