Ribh's D'Coopage

Ensure you have indoor nesting for the chooks, preferably in the kitchen. I've seen @Shadrach say that having a nesting box inside is just as sensible as running water or something along the lines of that.
I have a couple that need no encouragement! 🤣 The kitchen, however, is @ the back of the house, which is elevated due to the lie of the land & they will have about 20 steps to navigate to get up there!:gig

CATURDAY.🥰
This sooky boy is the fiercest protector of my person. He will take on big dogs, burly men, snakes & anything else he deems a threat to me. People underestimate cats. 😉

As we are about to have a rather massive climate change I have been rethinking what I need in a chicken coop. At present I am leaning towards this:

The area can be extended with extra segments to form a good sized run. I just need to measure the area where I propose to put it to make sure it will fit. Thoughts people?
Galvanized steel in hot climates just doesn't make a lot of sense to me, apart from cost of course. The plastic coop I have heats up under the sun very quickly; it's partly why a have a tarpaulin with a reflective foil on the underside covering the living quarters. They also loose heat very quickly comapred to tile/wood. I imagine steel roofs would have similar if not worse thermal performance.

Another thing to think about is noise. In a downpour you're underneath thousands of little drums.

Thanks, Shad. It would be in a shaded spot But I hadn't thought about the noise, which would be horrific in a torrential downpour.

My main thought is fox prevention, but you'd have thought of that already. I don't share Shad's worries because, if I've read the description correctly (and I might not have), the galvanised steel is only in the posts and mesh and the cover is polyethylene, which I presume is like a tarp, which would still be rather loud under heavy rainfall. The mesh looks small enough to keep mice and snakes out.

Thanks for sharing this. I find it very interesting as I have never seen a home without a hallway.
I grew up in a home without a hallway. The front door opened to the living room, on the left was the door to the master bedroom, straight ahead was the door to the kitchen-diner, once in the kitchen-diner on the left were doors to the two small bedrooms, and a door on right led to the laundry, off the laundry was the toilet and bathroom. It was small but adequate and no-one had to creep past sleepers to go to the toilet at night.

Yes, I couldn't find where they said what the cover was. I assumed it was like a tarp. It would need some sort of edging. I like it as a run set up even if I need a more traditional hen house set up inside it. is big enough to do that.

Actually, I've just had another look and it seems mice could get in around the door, so maybe a little DIY project there.
