Ribh's D'Coopage

Are you getting any help with getting sorted at the new place?
No, Shad. I'm on my own. I've got the electricity sorted but will have to travel into my nearest big centre the 1st week to order things like a bed, fridge, microwave & I need to be there to get the internet hooked up so it's going to be chaotic for the 1st little bit while I wait for things to arrive.

Good luck!

What's the situation with the chickens and a coop? Mobile one going with you, or a new one there?

The coop is one of the things I'm waiting on arriving. It's ordered but it will take about a week. Meanwhile it'll be the crate @ night & free ranging during the day

Did you end up getting one of those ones you showed us a couple of weeks back? I think it was a hoop coop with a cover?

Foxes. Hawks. Snakes. Dogs, maybe. I need secure fencing as quickly as possible.
Sounds serious - though not particularly exotic! But there's a lot in a name. Apparently some of the snakes (and spiders) there have scary venom. Also, I read that Australia has more, older, and more diverse bird species than anywhere else on the planet, and that a lot of the generalisations in aviculture are based squarely on western, esp. European, birds, and are inapplicable to a lot of the bird species in the antipodes.

Do you know yet what sort of hawks and other aerial predators might live around your new home, or is that something you'll research when you get there and can tap into local knowledge?

Carpet snakes, which are non venomous, would be my biggest snake threat. They eat chickens. Not sure which raptors are about. I saw lots circling overhead on the drive but not well enough to identify. Many of our raptors are scavengers rather than hunters. I'm hoping to see some bird species that will be new to me.
