Ribh's D'Coopage

It’s a sad Caturday for me. After six hours at the emergency vet, I have left Nightshade overnight in their ICU.
:fl

I checked with the nurse first thing. They are waiting for the surgeon and will call me.
Waiting for news.:fl
They are worried that either bleeding or swelling may cause him to suffocate post op, so want to keep him in the ICU tonight.
She said she had never seen anything like what they removed so she is not placing any bets on whether it is a benign polyp or a malignant tumor. We have to wait about a week for lab results on that.
For now I am taking it as good news that he has a fighting chance of coming home tomorrow.
Still waiting for news on his health. Hope it will be good. :hugs:hugs:fl
I hope he feels better being able to breathe. She said he is breathing fine just now.
More . :hugs:hugs:

Surgeon just called. Nightshade is out of surgery. Surgeon removed a 3x5 cm mass from his nasopharynx. That is huge! It was very vascular and he lost a lot of blood but is doing OK. They are worried that either bleeding or swelling may cause him to suffocate post op, so want to keep him in the ICU tonight.

RC, how did you discover the problem? Was it because his breathing was difficult or did you notice the lump? Or did he have a check-up in which it was noticed?

The lump is deep inside. Nothing to see or feel from outside. I am actually amazed that the surgeon could gain access in there!
I discovered the problem because he started choking on his dinner. Then he was trying to clear his throat but instead was drooling like crazy (I guess ‘cos he couldn’t swallow).
Then he was all hunched up with his head down on the floor looking very miserable.
I grabbed him to look in his mouth because I thought he had something stuck that I could pull out. But I couldn’t see anything and his drool started to turn bloody.
Throughout this he was breathing OK, but then I started hearing a rattling sound as he breathed.
I realized I was out of my depth and drove to the 24 hour clinic.

So stressful. I hope you're starting to feel calmer now you know the surgery was successful.

How scary. I hope he makes a complete recovery. :hugs

@RoyalChick : any more news? Is Nightshade doing better?
Yes! Thank you for checking in.
I just spoke to the nurse who cared for him overnight. She also saw him when he was first admitted and said he is so much better!
They took him off oxygen in the night as he is holding his own breathing wise.
She fed him several times in the night and he wolfed it down (hope he doesn’t get used to multiple feeds during the night!).
He also spent the night ingratiating himself to her by snuggling up to her and demanding to be petted.
He still sometimes sounds like he is obstructed but much less and not all the time. Hopefully just post op swelling.
The critical care vets will assess him this morning and call me if they think he is OK to come home today.
Of course I am still anxious to know what this weird mass was, but even if the worst case scenario plays out, at least I will get him home to comfort him.

@LozzyR - I feel so bad I drove you away from here - you should totally have posted your artwork here! I think of @Ribh’s thread as the natural place for cats, art, and impossibly pretty chickens. I will look at your game later when I am on my PC. Maybe even with Nightshade’s help - he loves to disrupt my activity on the computer.

Not at all, I think Nightshade is more important. I will make a few more tweaks tomorrow and if it’s ok with Ribh, I can post again here. Big hugs to you, Nightshade and all your kitties. :hugs

I'm so glad to hear he is improving. What a scare. :hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs
