Ribh's D'Coopage

The last blanket has gone out. Once I have pictures I will do 1 post with everyone's blanket featured so y'all can see them all together ~ & be secretly pleased that your own particular blanket is actually the very best one of all. ;):lau

Bob had to work late today and didn't get back on BYC. He'll probably be in tomorrow evening.

@Ribh I'm wondering how your chooks go with the 17? Mine started out picking the corn bits out and leaving the rest, but these days they eat all of it. If I put 17 and pellets in a bowl, they leave the pellets. I think it's high time I gave up on pellets altogether and provide only 17. What do you think?

@MaryJanet : My first ever flock I used cheap pellets. I can't say the girls were ever overly fussed. This time around I had a chat with my supplier. Her reasoning went something like this: She uses crumble because it's a lot harder for the girls to pick out only the bits they like so they will get much better nutritional value from their feed & it is far easier for them to eat. They also hate change so I kept with what they were used to & have had no feed issues. What is something of a problem is it is much easier for the girls to toss the crumble around ~ something they manage to do even with a treadle feeder so you may have a little more wastage. I buy 2 bags @ a time & it generally lasts me a little over a month for 10 birds. They are supplemented [sometimes quite heavily] with vegetable scraps though I do try & abide by the 10% rule.

The advice I've seen on here regarding food changes is to gradually add more & more of the new feed until you are only using the new food but it seems like you have already made that transition. :) Let us know how it goes.

@BY Bob do you have enough time and the right people for your challenging integration project? I hope you're not working alone? The right crew makes a lot of difference.

Right now I have no resources other than myself. I need to "matrix" manage and get others to give resources to assist me. Yippie!

Cranky, irritable, don't like being touched. They can stop laying as well. I give high protein feather fixer to help their diet. Hopefully it is not a hard molt and is a gentle one like Hattie and Lilly are having.

Thanks, me too!
I feed them an all flock and it’s 20%... that should be good right?
Oh, and most of my gals from last year have been laying very sporadically.. RIR, BuffOrp, Australorps, Barnevelder.. are very off and on.. Nilky my Silkie and Kelly my EE are my very best layers by far! Almost an egg a day.. always.. well, except when Nilky went broody..

Yup 20% is good. It doesn't have to be bad. Daisy (the greatest hen ever) never had a hard molt and did not even slow down her egg laying during her molt
