Ribh's D'Coopage

Tomorrow's forecast is 40C and 29% humidity. Another catastrophic day. It will be even worse down in Penrith (at the foot of the mountains) and Sydney

Is it a wave or just one day? I hope the fires don't escalate too much (I'm assuming there are a few already burning near where you live).

We're back down to 20 something today after 42 yesterday. There's a delightful cool breeze.

I'm not sure how much older than you I am, but when I was a kid everyone I knew in Qld kept chickens. [I grew up in Sydney on 90 degree blocks where it was impossible to keep chickens but lots of family up here] I think the both partners working has killed off the BY chickens, the home veggie patch, home baking etc. The number of kids my kids generation who don't know how to cook from scratch flabbergasts me! Not only did I teach my own to cook, I taught a lot of their friends as well. Like anything else, to get the most enjoyment you need time & that is a commodity sadly lacking in many lives. The girl I first went into chooks with [we got a heap of rescues together because they were cheap & all we could afford @ the time] laments no longer having them but she works big hours & isn't home enough to care for them.

I think you're right. I'm very lucky that i can rely on my neighbours when I'm out of town.
You are. I have John, but on those days we are both gone, I have to set up so the chooks can manage on their own because I don't have anyone I can rely on. I need to visit my mum but it is difficult to organise & John is a tad nervous as he lost one of my girls on me last year.

I do and over the years I've had some gorgeous looking males and females.
Punch, the bigger rooster in the pic below is a good looking rooster.
Nolia, the dark hen in the middle of the picture shows the Marans in her. She's tiny.

That red on his side is unlike any other red I've seen. Quite stunning. I love Nolia's colouring as well.

He needs another go at it to rebuild his confidence. All it takes is a proper head count and a bit of searching if one's missing.
It's the searching he can't do. :( He broke his back & has limited mobility so for this year the girls will have to be confined to the coop for the week I'm away. I'll probably wait till it's a little bit cooler this year...
