Ribh's D'Coopage

It's funny how things work out sometimes. John wasn't @ all keen on chicken adventuring ~ & the Australorps & Rocks did nothing to change his mind, though they have been wonderful layers. But when I brought this last lot of girls home he suddenly changed his tune. Lavender, of course, is just a joy & a delight, but he's been really taken with the Campines despite them being total nut jobs. I just sat in the pen with them for a while yesterday afternoon watching how they glowed like jewels in the sun. We are no longer having full on melt downs every time I appear, even when I appear in the pen, so long as I don't actually want to touch them. :D

Twenty odd years ago my man broke his back. Overnight he went from being an outdoors, works with his hands type to an invalid so I looked for ways he could have interests that didn't require manual work. He was a stamp collector & over time turned that into a small business but in the digital age stamps are disappearing fast & the market is drying up. John is a trained horticulturalist but I am the gardener. Go figure. :gigAnyway Air plants don't require soil or the sort of heavy manual labour regular gardening does so we have been moving in that direction. Personally I think air plants look like rather morbid growths or huge ungainly spiders but whatever. I am much happier to work with the water plants we are now gravitating towards but a package of water lilies arrived yesterday & they will all need to be potted up this morning. I think I am going to have to brave the insect repellent that I'm allergic to because the mozzies are after blood! Next week we have some bi~coloureds coming. So pretty. And the other night I found a rocket frog tucked up in one of the pond logs. Yay for helping the eco~system. Now if I can just eliminate the cane toads...

Well, day one of integration: It went better than I expected. I cut a small hole in the wire between the runs... don’t want to cut it all the way yet... just in case something goes wrong I can just cover it with a board. Anyway, the BG’s = big gals.. came to the new side and the middles found their way to the old side .... for the most part everyone was just minding their own business... except for Ruby..my fair and just leader! Now, she wasn’t hurting them.. just running at them and chasing them around :barnie... but nothing too bad.. so we will continue with short visits until all looks good. I don’t think it’ll be long.
I put them each back in their original runs and put a board for now.. here are some pics from today... the middles were loving have a dust bath in the old run.. and the BG’s were enjoying some grass and scratching in the leaves... Nilky and babies are still in a partitioned area in the middle..

It seems to be going very well. I am looking forward to seeing how it works out.

I like the way you can reconfigure your coop to provide various housing options. That's nifty.

Thank you! It happened to work out great with the new addition and the new babies at the same time! Hopefully soon I’ll be able to remove all the walls and be one big happy family!! :fl
But I am kinda liking the the option of having separate space for “just in case” situations! So I may just leave the small opening instead of cutting all the wire away...
