I saw that cassowary news story too! There's pretty much one rule for keeping cassowary: don't. Don't be so foolhardy, don't take the risk, don't go near them. Ever. They're ready and willing to cut people up. Why anyone would keep cassowary when they could keep a few of the glorious Australian parrot species is a mystery.

I know. The level of dumb really shocked me. I mean, these birds are basically a dinosaur. Maybe they just didn't know how dangerous they are ~ in which case they definitely had no business keeping one. Like people who keep emus as pets, though they are a little more amenable.

We live in a high wildlife area [for birds anyway]. It's pretty much a sanctuary for everything that flies & I've had to deal with more than my share of injured birdlife & ALL of it can be dangerous. We had a yellow headed parrot with mad parrot disease that kept attacking one of my girls. Only one thing for it. Sad but necessary. The Man dealt with it. And black swans with sea lice. Thank you, my children, who found it but @ least had the sense to leave it alone & come get me. This one wasn't in a good way because they are quite strong, like geese. Maybe I'm just a major woos but I treat all animals & birds with a certain amount of caution.

I love your pictures! The tractor looks amazing & it's so interesting looking @ different trees to gums! :)

Yeah, wild goats are a real pest. Do you have lots or just little groups here & there?

The goats outnumber permanent residents... last count there were over 380! They are good for exactly 4 things... tourism, eating scotch broom (a horrible invasive species!), feeding the eagles (so they eat less of our sheep), and dinner! They smell awful... and can you believe it, those 4 are still camping in my field... almost as bad as the shirtless, man-buned, dirty hippie “hikers”!

I swear, if they are still there tomorrow I’m going to let Chickie Hawk out to give them a piece of his hormones/mind ;) the goats that is... unless we find more squatters. I don’t know why they call it “tourist season” when you can’t get a license to hunt them! And no, according to my husband we cannot call them vermin and shoot them as pest control either

Edit to add: maybe I should just get a cassowary instead? Just looked that up thanks to y’all... looks like they would be even more effective than peacocks! And wow, scary birdie... next time there’s a “vicious rooster” thread someone should link in that! Give the OP a little perspective.

lol So many of my overseas friends think our wildlife is either *cute* or absolutely deadly. Best to work with absolutely deadly. Sadly John's roo grew from a cute little joey into an amorous *Big Red* with intentions on his mother's honour. Used to chase her round the clothes line. He took a one way trip to the zoo, which is better than it could have been.

I see someone keeping a cassowary in Florida was killed by the bird this week. What were they thinking keeping one @ all? They're not a domesticated bird .And they're huge. And they have this massive head bonker thing. And killer feet. Keeping one is a bit like ignoring the sign that says Don't swim with the sharks.
Oh my! Ima look that up!
