Ribh's D'Coopage

Well, the witch got the boot! I was observing the flock today and noticed that Kathryn was keeping the middles hold up in their “secret hideout” ... and when she was distracted they would come out and go straight for the food.. then she would notice and chase them off! That was that.... out she went.. I have no pity on her small lonely new residence...

Ahhh! I missed so much! Evil lack of notifications:he I swear having to “search” “Ribh” every time to get here makes me feel a bit like a stalker.

My tomatoes are just starting to flower but I seem to have mold or some sort of fungi all through the beans. Never had that happen before. :( Will replant if there's no improvement shortly. You have to be on the ball with your seedlings somewhere where it snows. :)

Do you get white powdery mildew down there too? We have issues with it most years due to our humidity. :hmm Hits the beans and squash the worst. Copper sulfate solution sprayed kills it fairly well if I recall, as does baking soda and water (changes the surface ph too basic for the fungi)

Yeah, I'm not sure. Our zucchini suffer from it but I'm now growing that in one of the chook beds. May try beans there too. I don't know what this is but It pings me off good! Yeah, I scroll through the stories thread looking for all the people I follows threads & go for * first unread* because I just am not seeing notifications. I don't mind doing it the long way round & just checking in. That way I seem to catch up on most stuff.;)

So we left the house @ 7am. Regular mainland day where John does the Dr & we pick up chook food & building supplies. Today we had a number of other minor errands: phone charger cord; 3 phones in the house & nary a 1 working!:) I don't care. I hate speaking on the phone but it is bad for business & driving the man slightly loopy. Sort of thing you just can't buy on the island. And glasses! Ugh! Mine have been falling off my nose every time I bend forward. Great in the chook pen where they are likely to land in a pile of dung or worse disappear in the mulch & get stepped on. *sigh* They have been making me cross so I went to have them adjusted ~ again! We are hard on glasses. John did 2 pairs in 2 days this week. And we have both been notified we need our regular checkup. I am really overdue but I can only cope with one health issue @ a time & I have been doing 2: skin cancers & teeth. Three was too many so I have been putting my eyes off. Besides I wanted to go with the more expensive silicone frames in the hope I wouldn't break quite so many pairs. X 2. If anything, the man is worse than I am.

The girls have been eating up a storm with the cooler weather & I ran out of mealworms ~ another unobtainable item on the island, fresh or dried!

I love our produce store. It doesn't matter what you want to know about, someone knows the answer. I wanted something to deal with the hordes & hordes of mozzies that we get after the rain. The coop has been literally humming with the peskies & they must be so annoying! I will post a pic for my Aussie friends who may be dealing with a similar issue. What I've got lasts for 6 weeks & the chappie was saying he has 500 dollar parrots [:th] he uses the stuff around, vet recommended & safe to spray directly on the birds.

My spoilt girls are peeved with me. No~one got out before we left & we were latish home so no~one has had much time out of the coop. Tough.

My local fodder store is a bit crap for chooks (great for horses), but the next closest is awesome! The bloke who runs it has chooks too, so he's very understanding of my questions about feed. It's so comforting when there's someone knowledgeable and kind to talk things over with.

Janet and Mary are close to accepting Sandy as one of their own. I saw only a few games of chasey today. I'm still feeding her separately so she can fill up before turning in, but otherwise they're together day and night. She's still sleeping on a different perch, but she's laying huge eggs whish seems odd because she's quite small. Janet is also laying well, but Mary's molt has come on strong, so I've not seen a white egg for a week now. Black feathers all over the place though, and it's so wet and chilly! Poor girl.

So true. And they know the Australian product for things you want. *Happy Sigh*

Namaste has had a really hard molt too but all her pin feathers seem to be in now even though she still looks incredibly ratty.:fl she's done before our weather turns really nasty. John has had the fire on so colder weather has actually arrived. :) I still have 3 layers but not everyone is laying every day. That's ok. I'm still getting enough to give some away. Anything so I don't have to cut the firewood!:lau Feeding a dozen chooks & keeping them happy little layers is a small price.
