Thanks, MaryJanet.Awwwww I'm so sorry about Nugget![]()
That's very true & she was warm & loved & had a really good life here with this little flock. I know all that ~ & I know I did the best I could for herAt least she passed snug in a safe place. Can't ask for more if you're a chicken.
@aart had mentioned to me about a certain mite that’ll eat the feathers.. maybe she can tell you.. I don’t remember the details..Well Namaste is back in the big coop being feisty & bossy, eating well & generally being chookish. Now it is her sister! *sigh* I have had more trouble & fewer eggs from the Australorps than anyone else when they are supposed to be hardy & great layers.Yesterday I gave Nugget the once over. To the best of my ability [which isn't saying much as no~one round here gets overly concerned about chooks so I've never seen a lot of the stuff I read about done & I'm a visual learner] I checked for lice, mites, worms [though she was wormed beginning of Autumn along with everyone else] & egg binding. Her crop seems fine.
However every feather she owns seems about ready to fall out all @ once. She seemed to have a small molt earlier but this is serious. I can see the shaft peeling away on the old feathers & lots of pin feathers poking through so I'm hopeful that's all that's making her lethargic. It is worrying though. I feel like a bad chicken keeper.
I’m having the same problem with.. mainly the flowers.. and some others... they are sleeping in the nestsFun? Fun?!
At least Tsuki only does a few pecks then leaves them alone...
Any suggestions on getting them to play nice would be greatly appreciated!
I really want them all up on a perch, it doen't even have to be the same one! Am I asking too much?![]()

She's gone.I went to let the girls out & she was as stiff as a board in a nesting box. Going to clean & disinfect the coop now. *sigh* I know this is a fact of chicken keeping but I don't like it!
Thank you.Oh, I’m so sorry... and sad

Oh okay... so this was a sudden thing? With Nugget? So not the one that has been having issues... how old was she?Thank you.I was so devastated this morning [a blubbering mess actually] I wasn't thinking straight. There's no way to know for sure without a necroposy, but when I was checking her over yesterday I noticed a large hard lumpy mass on one side of her spine. She wasn't keen on me investigating & I put it down to the pin feathers bothering her but the more I think about it [& pray about it] the more convinced I am she had some sort of growth. The Australorps aren't my easiest chickens to handle so I can't be absolutely sure but I'm starting to think that way. Sad ~ but even if I'd spotted it earlier not much I could have done.
