Ribh's D'Coopage

lo, Bob! My John too! Totally a dog person ~ but as I'm the one who looks after all the animals we've always had cats & John has converted. I think because we have had mostly male cats & when he saw how they would go into attack mode to protect me & he perceived them as being very dog~like, he came around. YD trained one to *fetch*. I think all animals respond according to how they're treated. Everything responds to love.

There you nailed it. "All animals respond to how they are treated" People are amazed at how my chickens behave in the same way they are surprised at how my cats respond. It's all about your relationship with the animal.

I have succumbed to chicken math. The fellow at the saddlery was surprised that the olive egger that he sold me laid brown eggs and said that the rest of those from that batch laid varying shades of green.:barnie

It didn't take much convincing to get me to try again.

This is Pepper and she is about 10 weeks old

She's not been socialized and I can't get any closer to her yet. She is desperate to join the other girls but is a bit small yet.:)

My neighbours, both sides, are totally dog people. My cats shock & astonish them ~ & they're mostly Ragdoll so quite timid really but they are very protective of me & will take on anything, keep all the dogs in their rightful place, know to leave the chickens alone & are pretty good about the wildlife too. I had a wonderful cat who was so wicked & devious about dogs no owner could walk their dog past our place. He used to hide & leap out [or on] as they went past & scare the poor mutts half to death!

It's the same with the chickens. A chicken is a chicken is a chicken to them but to me they have names & personalities & quirks & likes & dislikes & they will all come & eat from my hand, all look for that little bit of attention that tells them I know they're there & one or too will hop up in my lap. They can't believe I know who's egg is whos, but I know who prefers which nesting box & what colour & shape egg they lay. And I like them. I enjoy their company. My son explained with rolled eyes to his new wife that I talked to all my animals as if they were people. Why not? They talk to me & usually have a lot to say.

Oh! She is lovely! And a great name for her. Careful. You're not done with chicken math yet.:gig

Good morning folks :) Janet is not herself today. I think she's been surpassed by Mary in the pecking order. Mary gets to the number 1 spot on the roost early and won't relinquish it to Janet. Today they can be in the run most of the day, which will be a treat because it's been about 11 days since their last full day in the run. Hopefully some tensions will ease. And the weeds and grass will be trimmed.
