Lavender.
Whom I had to put up on a perch last night & threw out of the coop this morning. She paced the run & got so agitated about getting back on a nest she actually broke out of the run. This has never happened before. She's not the brightest girl I own.

This isn't the optimum way of dealing with her but without a crate I shall have to work with what I have. So long as she doesn't give Hepzibah ideas! That girl gave me major headaches last summer.​

Ugh! If I wanted to breed I'd be thrilled to bits about having such determined broodies but I don't & their antics are just a PITA. Lavender is complaining long & loud about the injustice being done her!

This past spring, I dealt with my first broody... A barnyard mix. So I gave her a half dozen fertile eggs (she lives in a convent) and kept taking away the others. She more than once tried to take my hand off. She hatched four and turned out to be a terrible mom, which didn't bode well for the chicks. So I really have no practical experience with broodies. Best of luck to you breaking her.

Thanks, Bob. In all the time I first kept chickens I never, ever had one go broody on me so I was shocked when I lost one in a broody trance & had another constantly going on me. My success rate with breaking is not high. I need to give the crate a go.

Good luck with it Ribh. @BY Bob 's Mal was only crated for a couple of days, hopefully Lavender won't take much longer.

I never had any broodies before Mal. I'm not going to fight it. I'll get her some eggs, let her hatch, and then give them away when they are old enough. If I want something in particular, I might stick chicks under her.

Of course I reserve the right to change my mind at any point.

Mal was only 2 days and 1 night in the crate. It worked great for me.
