Honestly! I just don't understand what all the fuss is about. The chickens here free range. I can't be held responsible if they see my house as part of their range.

What kinds of trees are those in the picture?

The leaves & branches @ the top belong to ironbark. The tree in the centre is an eucalypt sapling. Along the shoreline, mostly grey mangroves. There are seven varieties of mangrove here, all of which live @ different levels of the shoreline. Higher up on the other shore a mix of things, mainly eucalypt.

No. There are 700 different species of eucalypt. White barks, ghost gums, wallangarras, & a host of others all have white bark but the River Red gum & the Sydney Red gum, as the name suggests, have beautiful red bark. Scribbly gums are white with dark *scribbles*. There is also a rainbow eucalyptus ~ & yep, they have rainbow bark! Ironbarks are technically an eucalypt too, with thick rough, dark furrowed bark.

I just wanted to add another word on quarantine which is that Australia doesn't have the same diseases as other places because it's already so far from everywhere and we do fantastic quarantine at the borders. I know for sure one of the big poultry diseases simply doesn't exist here - I'm not confident, but maybe it's mareks.

My other thought on quarantine is that the old chickens are healthy (except for Sandy's menopause) and I thought young pullets wouldn't have accrued much in the way of worms at least. They might've brought a disease, but I've got a lot of faith in Dr Hill - possibly too much, his ability to fight the course of nature only extends so far.

That said, I know quarantine is good practice and intend to set up for it with the new henhouse.
