Good morning Bob.![]()
Good morning Bob, have a great day
Poor Lavender looks nearly naked! I will admit to being quite the interfering chicken mama when it comes to roosting sometimes. I won’t let anyone sit too far off on their own, and will shine the flashlight in the gaps until all but the most stubborn girls have hopped up to fill the gap. Of course, I don’t have quite the same size differences to deal with!
Mostly it’s the Old Barred Rock I chicken-napped who ends up trying to roost on the very bottom rung, and she ends up alone. I think it may be age/arthritis-like symptoms and her mass that makes her prefer the lowest roost. Even if she goes in first she just settles in the bottom corner right away. So, I get some of the other girls to hop up and make room, then I pick her up (using my hand/arm for @Shadrach ’s step up on the stick technique) and set her with friends on the next roost. If someone buddies up with her, I’ll leave them be on the bottom though. Increasing the roost thickness/size is on my summer to do list, as well as going to 4 rungs spaced out a bit more.
I'm an interferer too. I don't like to have anyone roost alone. I especially feel for Lavender just now. However *natural* it may be she can't be comfortable, looks awful & is struggling with her everyday activities due to her molt. It's very hard to watch.Poor Lavender looks nearly naked!
