Well, Lock, the first hen in the picture has turned out to be, well different.
It seems she is not going to be laying any eggs. She's also crowing. Not quite full on with it yet but crowing none the less. The rest of the tribe seem fine with this and the youngsters think she's wonderful. Lock is very patient with them and often eats with them and doesn't make them wait like the others do.
I will get a better picture but I think Lock is a lovely looking hen.

Oh yes. Lock will be the third non gender specific hen I've had here. Gedit is the only one I have posted pictures of. She was gorgeous and I was very upset when she drowned in the pond. She was the senior hen in Tribe 3 and the tribe has noticeably struggled in her absence.
Gedit was the hen in one of my stories that Harold invited to join Tribe 2.
What I find fascinating is the two roosters in Tribe 2 (Punch and Mag) have not tried to mate with her as far as I've seen. Mag is very protective of her and she and Mag are last out of the coop in the morning; Mag makes sure she gets off her perch before he'll head out.
From what I've seen here, chickens could teach humans a lot about respect for the elders, tolerance for those who do not fit in the range of normal and protection of the injured. They could also teach us a fair bit about disciplining of the young.

You're a very horrid women. How could you do that to her.
I confiscated Brackets eggs this morning. Talk about foul language.
She did go into the tribe's coop this evening with the others. No doubt she will sit on the nest tomorrow for a while sulking.
I've got Tackle in the maternity coop sitting. I'll give her three days and then confiscate here eggs as well.
Then it will be time to deal with Nolia who is ready to sit. She's another one due for the switch off laying cycle treatment.
And....Donk is getting ready to sit on this lot in a couple more days I estimate.

Knock has a nest on the West bank somewhere which I have yet to find.

Shad, may I ask a question or two about the way you manage broody hens?

Thst is part of the problem. I have over 30 years experience in a specialized field. No one else comes close. But I am only one person. I am holding the pieces together right now. Most people are just doing what they have always done, except from home. All the extra stuff that needs to be done to keep things going now has fallen to me.

I had been balancing pretty well but 17 new projects fell on me on Thursday. While I was on 6 straight hours of conference calls where I advanced none of my existing projects.

The problem is that all things I warned needed fixed or we would be in trouble come crisis time, now need fixed since it is crisis time. Since I was the one that pointed them out over the years, they now expect that I have the all answers and so they are all now my problems.

I'm sorry to dump this on your thread @Ribh but it feels better to have vented. In forgiveness, I offer this photo of Miss Patsy.

Thanks Lozzy. This weekend has helped a ton. Lots of chicken therapy and beautiful weather. Feeling good about heading back.
