Ribh's D'Coopage

My girls haven't laid for months, though Tsuki has been squatting for me so maybe she will start again soon. :fl

Any advice on encouraging the young ones to lay again?

It really hasn't been that cold here yet but I'm thinking of breaking out the warm porridge!
What Bob says. I have POL just starting to lay now but I am a lot further north than you are[ hence I get more daylight hours :)] but I am getting very few eggs from 14 chooks. Both my Araucanas are laying 2@ every 3 days, anyone else is rather erratic just now. Aoife has just started laying & seems to be on the Araucana cycle but all their eggs are bantam sized ~ fine unless I want to bake. I do like the big brown BR eggs for baking!

We've got rather a lot of rain coming. I'll have to let the girls have their run early before the downpour begins because once it does they won't be going anywhere!

It's all about daylight. If you want eggs, put a light on in the coop and extend the daylight hours.

I don't do that. I let them have a break from laying every winter. It's hard though. I love their eggs.
I'm rather pleased to see the BRs & favorelles take a break. They are such good consistent layers all year round I don't mind them freeloading for a bit. Better than them going broody! 🙄

They lay when they lay is my approach. I get many more eggs than I can use. I'm no longer able to give them away to the food banks and I don't bake. I might make some meringues if I get a moment.

Oh! That was here a while ago. It was sat on top of a mountain.

Truth. I really feel they need a break in order to stay healthy. Of course I started with leghorns who laid year round and wound up having reproductive issues. So that does color my opinion a little.

If you don't mind me asking, why can't you give them to food banks? I know answer is going to frustrate me but I have to ask.
