Good call! I really didn't know much about them but they were a breed that interested me & their shape is exquisite.

When I got my chickens this go around...I wasn't very excited about it as I felt we were going backwards instead of moving ahead...they were a food source...not for meat(unless the economy tanked) but eggs, I was also looking for friendly & hardy breeds. They have become so much more to me than I had ever imagined! I hope to get a few more hens in the Spring & I already have a name that I hope will fit one of them...she will have to be an elegant hen for it to work! I'm still trying to decide what I will be getting!

I started that way; EGGS! I can afford some freeloaders & for me pretty is a must. The man wasn't keen until he saw some of the birds I was getting & that treated well they weren't complete psychos!

She's the 2nd bantam I've had here with aspirations beyond her size. It always amuses & astounds me to watch the smallest birds take on the biggest girls around.

I hope she doesn't overdo it. There is always one that won't put up with it.

Especially if she picks the wrong big one. Of course she will learn, one way or another.

Luckily amongst the new girls they're all pretty much wimps apart from Ceres & she is closer to Titania in size.

She will ~ but I remember Pebbles just took it for granted that she would be accepted on her own terms & the astounding thing was, she was! The others all had to earn their place in the flock. Not Pebbles! She just stepped right in & said, Mine! And everybody let her.

The more property one has the more work there is, so that's definitely a huge consideration! We were ready to be finished with homesteading...to travel and not have anymore animals...then Covid! So, we are back to chickens, pigs and we added rabbits this year! The work is all done by us...without help, which is how it's always been...this is not how we envisioned our retirement! Maybe, if I had never experienced this life I wouldn't whine about it so much now! That being said, I am truly thankful for what we have and the level of self sufficiency that provides!

And the pleasure of knowing where your food is coming from and how they are being treated and raised is something to be thankful for as well (quietly tucking soapbox back under chair, oops)

January is a good month to take off. It's far too hot to work. I know you'll be busy but the end result should be very, very satisfying!

I'm really looking forward to a break from responsibility.
