Ribh's D'Coopage

I have not been in the backyard with my chooks since Monday morning and I am missing them. 🥺

My left knee “blew up” on Monday afternoon and I have spent the time resting it and going to various medical appointments.

Luckily my family has taken up some of the slack but it is not the same.

I’m going to try and hobble out there this afternoon. Hubby has put my stool on wheels out there. 🙂
I hope your knee gets better soon ACM. :hugs

You are in a much better postion for this than I am. I've always worked to break my broodies so am still learning to trust they are better @ this than I am. :D
I wouldn't trust a brooding hen for longer than 3 days. If a hen sits for 3 days without feeding, drinking, pooping and bathing, I'd get her up against her will on the 4th day. Maybe sooner if the weather's extremely hot.

They don't need much energy intake if they're brooding. They just sit instead of running around most of the day.

But thinking of your hens, they need some energy for defending against nest interlopers. So they might get themselves up every day.

If you brought the sugar cane mulch bales back in, would the other hens use the bales and leave the broodies alone? Might be worth a try for a few days?

Yep. The man's been on my case about that too. After the circus with Wrold & Alpia last year I wasn't expecting the girls to be so calm about things but no~one seems fazed @ all. :idunnoAnd I was paying attention to the Phyllis/Sydney hatches so can hardly believe how calm everybody is being ~ especially as I never expected [or wanted] to be doing this.
Your tribe must approve of what is about to happen. Mine did not.

Luckily these 2 are getting up themselves. Wrold goes super late in the day but she is doing it. The bales won't work for Luna. She's never used them. The hens who like them aren't a problem. 🙄 It could be worse. I could have everyone wanting these nest boxes & that wouldn't work @ all. As it is it's only a couple of hens really & if they have an egg to sit on they seem perfectly happy.

Ok, well that's manageable even though it's pesky.

I think maybe the size of the flock is a factor in this.

I'm ready to fence off a corner of the funding for Ivy if needs be.
I think flock size is a factor. So long as my girls react according to type it will be insane but calm. *sigh* We never seem to do things according to how everyone else says these things will happen so here I am out on a limb again hoping I don't saw my own branch off.
