That Penguin is a pistol. I figured she had designs on the top, crowing and all. This is her territory now!

Is it ever! Guess what she did tonight; helped herself to Tegan's bed! I had a look in the old henhouse where the big girls sleep; I opened the side wall and there's Tegan, right by the wall! Nyssa is on the roost, so I peer in, and there's Penguin, making herself at home in the next box! The baby floofs put themselves to bed in the quarantine coop (all three of them tried to settle in the broken tractor bedroom last night!) and I left Penguin where she was. I took the fence panels out; they can get past it!

I'm pretty much in charge of caring for our small flock of 13 Barred Holland's as it give me something to do and it gets me out of the house briefly.

ANd with spring coming, time outside will be more comfortable and fun!

Nyssa’s started moulting.

Kinda early in the season isn't it? That would be like my hens moulting at the end of August

Now’s better than when it’s actually getting cold. I’ll check for previous moults and see when they were.

I think the season has already turned up here ~ judging by the early morning feel. Could be we will have an early Autumn & a prolonged winter.

It was so chilly this morning I didn't want to get out of bed. In February!! First time for everything.

For what it's worth I've always found layers are more quickly accepted & integrated & take their place immediately with the established layers. Pullets do better once they begin laying.

So you think they like this yard better than the old set up. What do you think they like better about this place?

Apples & Oranges, Bob, apples & oranges. It's nowhere near as steep. The garden is pretty well established so surviving the chooks quite well. The lawn is a huge bonus from the chook's pov, there are multiple dustbathing areas, & several really large very deep litter areas as well, plus they get the whole backyard to forage.
