Ribh's D'Coopage

There are lots of ways it could go with eight, or nine eggs. It is possible although not likely you end up with six roosters and three hens out of nine.
What do you do then?
You could also find that the hatch rate is low.
Would you spread the eggs between more than one broody?
Some of those Marans hens are big. Think Fat Bird being middle weight.
I usually have lots of broodies so yes, I would spread the eggs around. I will wait on Wrold. She is older, a good broody & a ferocious defender of her nest ~ then anyone else who is broody @ the time.

I am still considering the rooster problem.

True, oh sage. I know that's a possibility but it's always a risk.

That's really helpful. I want to give Wrold 1st option on the breed I really want ~ Campines~ & those eggs can be quite large too. The rest of the broodies are much smaller. I can't count on Ha'penny. She's unreliable & nests in weird places.

I've pretty much decided against the Marans. Too many unknowns for me.
