RIR Breed Thread

You must take very good care of Miss Red. When a single hen wanders into the yard like that and stays, it almost always means that she is the special pet of your House Elf.

Perhaps you did not know that you had a House Elf, but almost surely you do, as evidenced by this little hen.

He will expect you to watch out for her particularly, and give her first choice at all the food and so forth.

She will be good luck for you as long as she lives. You are so fortunate to have a House Elf with a little hen of his own, as he will feel much more at home there with his own little hen.

I told about little "Survivor" on the incubating index, but since he is a RIR, thought I would tell about him/her here.

Ok. These eggs came from Taterschickens, and you know what wonderful chickens she has.

I had 10 of her eggs in my 'overflow' incubator, a LG. I accidentally let it get too high, and it got up to 107+.

I almost tossed them, and then, I thought, what the heck, and left them in there. But I paid very little attention to them, because I was just so sure that they were goners. I only turned them a few times the rest of the incubation period. Well, four out of the 10 hatched.

But the story doesn't end there.

When the hatch was over and everything was hatched that was going to hatch, I pulled the cord on the incubator to let it cool off. That was at night. The next morning I went to clean out the incubator. It has been cold here in West Virginia, and the incubator room was in the 60's.

I used to open each shell that was unhatched but I don't do it anymore because, to tell the truth, it bothers me too much, and they are always dead anyway.

Well, as I was tossing one egg into the trash, I heard a faint, tiny 'cheep'. In disbelieve, I scrounged around in the garbage, found it, and sure, enough, a small pip was there, and it peeped at me again. It was completely chilled, it could never have hatched itself, so I peeled its shell off, too quickly as it turned out, because he bled a good little bit. But he was alive, if barely. I put him into a warm incubator to warm up.

Sure, enough, in a little while he was dry and all fluffed up, and staggering around amongst the eggs.

I marked him with blue food coloring so I would be sure to know who he is, because he is a breeder for sure!

That is one tough chick to survive being cooked and chilled and having his shell yanked off!

I named him 'Survivor'. (That is gender neutral.) He continues to do very well. He was a little undersized at first, but he has caught up.

These birds are gorgeous! My RIR's are only 4 weeks old & I can't wait to see how they turn out (their parents are beautiful). Does anybody know what you get if you cross a RIR w/ a SLW?

What an awesome story! I have a bunch of Reds from Imogene and I love them (3 different hatches). I will never get an other Red from a hatchery after hatching these beauties from Imogene. I hope Survivor continues to do well and grows into a lovely bird! Do you have any photos? I need to take pics of my guys to post, but the weather has been cool an cloudy, not good for taking pictures.

I believe that a RIR Roo over SLW hens should be a sex link, with the roos white and the gals reddish.

I am planning to do this next year. I have a bunch of little SLW's peeping away right next to me as I type.

No, I don't plan to get any from hatcheries either.

And the weather has been AWFUL here, rain rain rain and cold and miserable.

I need to take some pics.

Yes you MUST take care of Miss Red. She has my nickname!

I'm currently waiting for payday and I'm getting some RIR's from Pine Grove [William] I am super-duper excited because I LOVE his birds. They are beautiful, wish I could see some in person before they get here.

Soon I will be a proud RIR owner! The last one I had was a production red, she lived about five years and only laid for maybe two of them. Three tops... she was a great little hen, sweetest thing.

Congratulations on your hatch, Chris. Funny you just posted this. I just came inside from taking a few pictures of my RIR and rosecomb RIRs. They came from Dick Horstman, and are just 7 wks old.

Your adult birds pictured are very nice looking!
