This might sound dumb... but question.

I got a RIR chick from the feed store. He's now 8 weeks old. I've seen so many pictures of these young RIR birds and they all seem to have white or light colored heads before they get their feathers in. My little boy never had that. It's just kind of weird. Why is it that some of the others get that color of head and mine didn't?

Well, I think it probably speaks well for him. My little red heads are from Taterschickens eggs, and they are dark, dark, dark.

Really nice little RIR's.

A lot has to with breeding. Commercial type Rhode Island Red like the the ones you get from hatcheries and feed stores have little resemblance to a good bred Rhode Island Red from a breeder yes there red but that is as far as it goes.

The stray White down and the White tips of the wing feathers in a lot of "breeder" type Rhode Island Red when they are young is from the Columbian gene. They the Columbian gene from the
Brahma that was used to create the Rhode Island Red.

Thanks, Chris.
I'm more of a bantam Cochin person but I've always been a fan of the looks of a male RIR. I guess I was just lucky when I got my boy from the feed store. I'll have to post some updated pictures of him. He's 8 weeks old now and still doesn't have a tail. lol I guess he isn't amazing quality like your's or others show birds but I like him regardless.
