RIR Breed Thread

Rareroo, Thanks for sharing! I love little red fuzz butts.
I'm in New England and as much as I hate the winters, I do love living in an area with a ton of history. I am fortunate enough to live near by to the area where the RIR was first developed!
RIR's were our first chickens. We got them for eggs only and were content to have hatchery stock. We chose the breed because we wanted chickens that are proven to do well in our area. After spending some time on this forum, I quickly learned the difference between hatchery Reds and heritage. I am now in the process of switching over from hatchery to heritage stock. Once my babies grow out from Taterschickens and Pine Grove, my hatchery Reds will find new homes. Since I have both in my back yard right now I can truely see the difference between what the hatcheries call a RIR and a well bred heritage Red. They are not the same bird at all!
Hatcheries do have their place in this world, but I won't have anymore hatchery birds in my backyard. I want to know that my RIR is a real RIR, or my Delawares are real Delawares. I wish Pine Grove was able to fill the country with his lovely birds so that more folks can see that they are special and not common

Pine Grove has very nice birds, but there are certainly others that produce nice RIR that are bred for the standard

Adrian Rademacher Minn.
urch/Turnland Minn.
Dick Horstman Ohio (I believe)
Greg Chamness Ill. Not sure what he is doing this year.

I beleive Dick still has chicks
There is a guy on Eggbid that sells eggs very reasonable Chickenman 15 a dozen
very nice birds as well

Imogene has eggs for sale on this board regularly they are very nice. She is down south somewhere

No shortage of good producers if you know where to look

RAREROO, I hope that you enjoy your Pine Grove birds as much as I'm enjoying mine. Yesterday they turned 6wks. old so it was time to let them out of the brooder/coop to enjoy the great outdoors. Good luck!

Thanks for the list. For someone like me, knowing where to find them was a problem. I relied heavily on the imput of other BYC members when I went looking for hatching eggs. My first batch came from Imogene [taterschickens] as well as my 2nd and 3rd batch. She is out of the Red business now as she wants to focus on Orpingtons.

One correction to the list Dick Horstman is out of PA....

Yes--I have gotten eggs from Imogene more than once, and I have very good luck with her eggs. The chicks are lovely and very dark. They are nice, too. Very friendly and quiet.

I have hatchery RIR and I would like to buy Heritage RIR.I would like to have a few chicks, but don't know how to go about finding them in my area in central Mo. My chickens have the good life here and I really care for them. Does anyone have suggestion?

Are you wanting to hatch eggs or get chicks? Are you wanting Large Fowl or Bantam?
There are a few good breeds that will sell chicks and some of them will sell eggs...

Chris

I am looking for chicks. I have no way of hatching on my own, or enough knowledge. Thanks for responding to my question.
