I think once they understand you are trying to rehab and rescue it and not keep it they will be sympathetic. I hope so, anyway!

I initially tried dog food, it was a disaster. It is too sticky.They eat cactus, fruit, and insects. When it gets bigger it will eat lizards and small mammals. You might try canned cat or dog food?

Thank you so much for all of your thoughtful comments. The poor little guy did not make it. I called my vet earlier and he told me what I suspected. It had pneumonia, and probably was sick already before it was found, that is likely why it was out of the nest in the first place. The pinfeather stage is a tough one for baby birds. Sad doings. At least he was warm and as comfortable as possible rather than being eaten alive by ants.
