So I turned the BIG 50 this past November. My sister has a backyard flock of mixed breeds, from Easter Eggers, to Orpingtons and Cochins....long story short I don't speak to her anymore, but I'd always wanted chickens way before she got her flock, that just enhanced the reminder . When we were kids I helped my Grandmother around her small CT farm and helped her care for her flock of chickens. I'm also big into horses, I was always that outdoors type growing up. Well a week after their hatch day on March 14th I picked up four English Orpington chicks bred by an experienced breeder near me. Two are Red Mottled and two are Golden Laced. They should grow up to be gorgeous birds.

This will be the place I share the joys and ups and downs of raising our little flock. My parents and I are excited to embark on the journey of our own flock of feathered family members. So meet Rose, Sophia, Blanche (maybe Stan...LOL), and Dorothy, our "Golden Girls" from Cocktown Funky Orpingtons. :) I'm afraid of chicken math, btw....already wondering how we can expand hahaha.

Well yesterday was a big day for us. We upgraded the Girls' brooder from a smaller plastic tote to one of the big boy totes from Home Depot. You know, those big black totes with the yellow lids? It's doubled their useable space, which we discovered meant that Flight School could begin.

With a peep and a crazed flapping of wings four chicks hop flew back and forth across the space, why walk when you can FLY?, am I right? This brought us to the realization we now needed a cover for the new digs...because Blanche's favorite pastime is now leap frogging over her siblings to get where she wants to go, and she can jump pretty high for 2 weeks old, lol! My Dad is a retired electrician in his early 70s and he loves a project! With some scrap wood and some chicken wire he made the perfect ceiling for our little flight brigade, and they seem happier with the comfort of a roof of sorts.

Now we've got that sorted, we wait to see if Blanche is actually Stan, because for sure we're getting some Roo vibes from him(her)?? lol.

Happy Cluck Y'all!

Oh I'm so loving it already! Y'all are my "peeps" hahaha. And Chicken Math is def a thing lol.....

Tyvm I love them so much. :)
What can you do but to love them, cuteness overload ❤️

Blanche might still be just Blanche, I had one like that. 1 of my chicks was like your Blanche and it grown into a hen and still jumping around.
I had 2 roosters and I noticed they were must friendlier when they were chick than the hens, and not fearful at all.

My Dad thinks they are all girlies because they are very shy even with a lot of attention/hand feeding etc.
