Roo attacked me yesterday, scared me geez

The water gun is a good idea. Try that if you can. Works with my cat who is more evil than any rooster :gig

She's not really 'evil' persay.. Just really bad.. She does bite if she feels like it :hide

I have a GLW Roo, and he has not attacked me, he is 9 months old, but he has gone after my two daughters & hubby. As soon as they come in & tell me, I go out and follow him around until I back him into a corner. I tell him, he will get a swift kick in the rump with the boots I have on, or he is going to make a nice Sunday Dinner. So he better think long & hard about what he is doing.

I get the look from him, but he keeps his distance.

Now my Silkie Roo, and am ready to punt over the fence. Stupid little thing can hardly see where his food is, but will come charging me in the morning. I just keep giving him a ride in the air with my boot, and he is already listed on Craig's List. My other Silkie Roo is just a little sweetheart, and he does not need to pick up bad behaviors from the little turd.

don't kill him!!! mine does the same thing nd i just kick him back and he goes away. and when i say kick... i mean HARD! it doesnt happen till the next time i come. and I'm proud of my roo. and you should be yours because if they don't attack you they won't attack real predators. you don't want one that just sits back and only defends himself, do you? he will protect his girls when something does happen, and thats all he is trying to do.

I keep chickens for the joy of keeping chickens. When a chicken no longer is a joy, it's gone. (No, I don't mean "rehomed".) If you want to spend the rest of that rooster's life (they can live for quite a long time) worrying about it attacking you every time you go to the coop, that is, of course, your choice. Personally, I wouldn't spend the next 6 or 7 years with a rooster like that. What kind of quality of life are you giving your rooster if you have to kick it HARD! every time you go to your chickens just to keep from being attacked? I'm not sure that's the kindest thing. Another thing to consider is the genetics he's passing along to his offspring. Is human-aggressiveness hereditary? I can't say for sure. Do you want to take that chance?

And this: if they don't attack you they won't attack real predators. I respectfully disagree. There are plenty of roosters out there who are not aggressive toward humans that will still protect their flock. They just know who's top dog around the place, and it's not them.

As I said before, it's entirely your choice. You're the only one who knows how much you want to put up with from a rooster. If you decide to eat him, remember that there are lots of nice roosters out there needing a good home. Maybe you could help one of them out.

UPDATE: We went and plucked him off the roost last night and put him in a sep cage. This morning he is plenty mad, but at this point I do not care. I do NOT want to live the next 6 to 7 years kicking at him. He is big and does not back down. I lose every dang time after a nice long fight. I love my girls and my other Roo and have found so much enjoyment from them. I do not want 1 bad Roo out of 26 chickens to ruin this for me. There seemed to be a nice calm in the little girls side without him going after them or me this morning and I enjoyed that. So, firing up the crock pot and Sunday dinner is planned.
I really want to thank all of you for your comments. I rasied him and do not take this lightly. This is the first time this has ever happened to us and it is not easy. Thank you again!

You are certainly doing the right thing! I congratulate you for your courage, culling an animal is never an easy thing, but necessary for good husbandry.

Hey! I had a lovely Brahama type rooster who was sweet and friendly and ate out of my hand. He would even let the hens eat before he did. Such a gentleman! Sadly, a neighbors dog killed him. I have a friend who had two similar roosters and wanted to get rid of one, so I took him. He started attacking my husband and then me, too! Grrrrrrrf! He is quite big and I can't imagine grabbing him! I get a snow shovel and a water bottle and stand in front of him and dare him to attack! He usually walks away, but I guess the old adage "don't turn your back on a rooster" is true..... I like having a rooster as they do protect the hens and it would be nice to have some chicks, but I hate to worry about his bad temper.

Oh, so sorry you have to do that. I don't think I could kill anything. However, chicken for food is the best way to do it, if you can handle that. At least they serve a good purpose.... I am too soft to be a farmer! Your rooster looks like the fighting kind! Best wishes and enjoy your coq au vin!
