Roos or keepers? I live in town....

O happy day! Big red is a girl! I will be posting more pics of the spurs...and anything else I can get a good photo of...she comes running for treats and eats from my hand and is generally such a good girl that we were seriously bummed about her gender status change.....my husband is still in doubt and he thinks BRC might be crowing and we are just missing it...

Does this mean that crowing is the actual best rule of thumb sexing method for newbies like me/unknown chicken breed owners?

I'm guessing your feed store orders from Ideal...and based on age and backing up three weeks for laying, it was probably still pretty hot, so don't be surprised to get a lot of boys (this per one of the local chicken breeders/hatchers that supplies a few local stores)

1 - if buff sebright, it's a boy because it has a noticeable comb already
2 - blk frizzle cochin definitely boy, I got two of those! And they're fiesty!
3- oegb? unsure, showing comb, how old? Boy?
4 - Red frizzle cochin see #2
5 - Buff brahma - I was going to say boy, but then read it's younger. They are a breed where boys tend to feather out more slowly, so watch for that. It could be a mille fleur d'uccle? Are those muffs or just the lighting? See #13
6 - white cochin, unsure, what age? guessing boy
7- white frizzle cochin, probably boy
8- white cochin probably girl
9, 12, 15, 16 - silver and golden sebrights - if they show any sort of comb early on, they are boys! You will see the difference easily between the boys and girls.
10 - ?? looks girl
11 -Buff cochin, probably girl
13 - Blue mille fleur d'uccle? Are those muffs in the picture? Legs don't looked feathered enough for partridge cochin. Too young to tell, but if it's a d'uccle, the comb will develop rather early if it's a boy.
14 - black oegb, I'm guessing boy but not sure

Out of 18, I ended up with only 8 girls.

You can generally tell with Sebrights by week 3. If you give a closer picture of their comb we could at least tell you for two.

However, as for sebrights crowing... I have a different experience to others it would seem. My has a lovely little crow. He lives just outside the house and it's not that loud. He also only crows when he wants something (he crowed yesterday because they were out of food and hasn't crowed since I went to top it up). He can go for days without crowing. Smaller birds generally have a smaller crow than bigger ones. Admittedly, mine is only 14 weeks old, but still.... He wouldn't still be here if I couldn't get away with it.

Yep, my feedstore does order from Ideal...at least I am pretty sure they do.

I am in Oklahoma so it makes sense they would order from a big hatchery in Texas.

I am thinking 12 of the 16 are boys! So I think you did better picking than me....

3 out of 4 of the sebrights are boys....I am seeing wee tiny spikes on their little heads.

So depressing that I can't keep all of them...they are soo stinking cute! The white frizzle has started crowing already....my plan is to take photos of everyone again after I do a round of baths. I'll post them in this thread again as soon as I get fresh photos done!

Thanks to everyone for the great information!

I'd say that's best.

BRC does look girlish, but better pictures of the saddle/hackle feathers would help for sure.

Ya'll I think BRC is a boy for SURE.

He started crowing.
Loudly.

4 am.

Yes, I did hear people outside talking when I went outside to shush him.

O NOES! BUSTED! ACK!

However....

I think it was the college students on the next block.
Yes, I did distinctly hear the word CHICKEN and the tone of annoyance.
However I did also note they were STILL UP college students, not freshly awakened.

The odds of them finding the correct authority to complain to and the correct house to complain about is minimal..after all it is a house full of college-aged boys who like to drink beers 'till dawn.

Rearranged coop to be less of a magnifier of sound and more of a sound dampener.
Have not heard him since, so whew? He is going to be re-homed soon.

thanks all and I will post a new rooster-y photo of him soon.
