We got several chicks this spring in a few different breeds. I ordered all pullets but one was mis-sexed and we wound up with a cockerel. I’m trying to figure out if he is a brown leghorn or a welsummer. I know the easiest way to tell the two apart is earlobe color and his are definitely red, but I have also read that the earlobes don’t turn white until they are older. This cockerel is about 8.5 weeks old. Any thoughts whether he is a welsummer or a brown leghorn?

Looks more like a brown Leghorn to me, too. The build seems lighter than a Welsumer, and Leghorns are known for their large combs, which this guy definitely has. It's a whopper for 8.5 weeks! The white earlobes could develop later, or he may just be hatchery quality. I wouldn't discount the possibility that he's one of the hatchery hybrids involving Leghorns, either.
