Thank you! I will give them time, I'm not too bothered, I'd i wanted to hatch chicks I'd just use his hatch mates eggs anyway. And no he's the boss, definitely the dominant individual in my flock, and they don't attempt to put him in his place, they just avoid being mated. And Outpost JWB, I'm not sure, he likes to keep them all together, but has never had to protect them from anything... We only have cats and foxes in the city in England and foxes don't come out in the day and cats mysteriously avoid our garden (we have several cats on our not-so-long road :D )

Hello all! Some of u may remember me from previous posts. I got a new welsummer (supposedly) cockerel. He was 7 months old when i got him.... Guess that means he is close to 8 months. I kept him seperated for a while for quarantine and put him n the run next to the coop, away from the girls for a week. They were all trying to get to each other. My Columbian wyandotte would squat if he looked at her.

Well they have been together for a week or so now and Helios is an amazing cockerel! He anounces every egg. He feeds his girls (i saw him put food in aspens mouth).
He fluffs up the nest box and encourages the girls to use it - ive had no more missing eggs while free ranging.

AND

I found Helios, my awesome cockerel, setting on eggs! How stinking cool is that!

"He" might be a capon... sounds too good to be true. Congratulations and continued good luck with him.

I had no idea what a capon was, so i looked it up. He definitely isnt. He is fertilizing eggs.

I have two young roos who are so aggressively two older roos are getting aggressive. Should I get rid of the two young ones, or how can I calm them down? Also the spurs on my roos are gouging my hens. I've already lost one he and have another separated to heal. But as soon as I reintroduced her to the flock the roos go crazy trying to mate with her. The other hens are getting their feathers scratched off also, it makes me want to get rid of my roos. Any advise would help. Thank you

I was joking Yes, that's surely loos like a fertile egg!!! I'd be hatching some!!!

I may have to get some nice sized Spangled and start from 'scratch'. What I want is two or three very nice pullets...I have a line on a couple cockerels...the breeder asked I not mention her name, I suppose not wanting to be associated with anyone's 'WHITE' project. I can certainly honor that request...NAY...DEMAND!!

Whatever else you might do, you need to trim the spurs. That can save your hens a lot of pain and perhaps their lives.

Now that i know he is fertilizing eggs, i plan to broody hatch if ever one of my hens decides to go broody.... Helios seems to be trying to encourage broodiness and im marking eggs so i can leave eggs n the nest all the time in hopes of getting a broody hen.... Idk if it will work.

Yep...I too am going to rely more on the old fashioned system to some extent this year.
