Rooster Coddling

 I guess I’ve been breaking the rules! I hold my roosters even more than my hens... Cowboy, my 3 year old rooster (handled since day 1) hasn’t even shown any aggression towards me or anyone else... Also my cockerels don’t act crazily like I’ve seen (I.e. aggression). I’ll continue to be a “rooster hugger” until further notice :lau:gig:gig
I saw someone posted they handle and coddle all their roosters and don't get "many" idiots. They said they consider it a more effective means of judging their true character.

I thought that is an interesting take... and maybe worth considering.

However... I KNOW very deeply the hurt of having your favorite sweet "rooster" who naps on your lap suddenly turn into Satan spawn and start attacking, stalking, crowing AT, and making life a general hell for the well intention-ed uninformed keeper.

It's awesome to see the different experiences! :thumbsup

I hadn't read that one yet. In breeding it is interesting to see how some things pass to same sex offspring while others pass to opposite. Genetics is fascinating stuff! :pop

Now that you mention it... her daughters with the very same rooster were much more shy and lower pecking order among the flock.

Yes culling from your flock can be rehoming. It's a great option for some birds. :thumbsup

I was out in my Silkie pen just now and saw a hen do the wing dance at a subordinate... So I should say the wing dance towards me is not accepted. ;)
Funny you should mention females doing the wing dance.
One of my 3 month old Silver Penciled Rocks did that when I was touching her.
I poked her with my finger.
All my teenagers (12) are really doing the pecking order thing right now.
I can’t have them thinking I’m any sort of subordinate lol.
