Hey everyone,

I have an older silkie cockerel who is very randy. He often tries to breed my 11 week old and 19 week old silkie chicks. Of course, most of the time they run away from him like he’s a pervert, which he is, and cry for my protection.

My main question is, will he only try to mount the females of this group? Because he definitely tries to mount Mango and Satin who I know are girls, but he’ll also try to mount French Fry, who I haven’t been able to determine gender of yet.

Does this mean that French Fry is a girl? And so is any of the other chicks he tries to mount? Because I’ve not seen him try to mount the ones that I’m sure are boys.

If so, this is a great and easy way for me to determine gender. Or, maybe he just tries to mount anything that seems like a silkie.

No, it is not a definitive indicator of a chicken's sex. Mounting is as much about dominance as it is about mating.

Maybe he should be locked up until his hormones subside a little.

They all free range on a couple acres, so the chicks just tend to go to a different area than where he stays. Haven't had a real problem with it. But he only tries to mate, he hasn't mounted somebody without the intention to mate before.
