Um... this morning I went to check on the chickens and collect our eggs and came across quite an unusual sight (at least I think it's odd). Our roo decided to nestle in one of our hen's [empty] nesting boxes and proceeded to act as if he was about to lay. He would gather the straw around him, fluff is feathers, scoot his bum deeper into the box, and with tail sticking straight up in the air would cluck very contently. When approached [and "poked" a bit], he would puff up and scream/growl at me (just as my hen did when she went broody). About 2 hours later when I walked by their coop again, he seemed to have given up and got off the nest.
Is this normal behavior for a rooster? Was he actually trying to lay or is this just something I'm assuming? AND YES...it is a rooster for sure, not a hen...this boy has a very loud pair of lungs at 4:30am.
