I’ve been driving myself crazy with who’s a hen, who’s a roo and these sweet little chicks are only 4-5 weeks old. I wish we could keep a rooster, but we can’t, so it’s stressing me out.
I have a few questions.
There are plenty of breeds where the roosters and hens have very similar coloring, but also those where the roosters look so different. I have a partridge Cochin, when could I expect to see some of those rooster colored feathers if my Cochin is in fact a roo.
Moony feathered pretty early (is that a Cochin thing?), but also has a reddish comb and wattle. I don’t know the hatch date, but it’s somewhere between 5/28-6/7, very likely not 6/7 though. Moony already had wing feathers. Is it possible for a pullet to have an early red comb and wattle or is this pretty much a sure fire way to tell a boy from girl?
My next question is Moony was labeled a standard, but is smaller than some of the other (different breed) chicks that are supposed to be the same age. Aside from the amount of fluffy feathers, Moony is about the same size or smaller than 3 others that were younger/smaller when we bought them. Is it possible that I got a bantam? Or just a small standard? I thought Cochin were supposed to be pretty big?
Next, I have two Wyandotte’s. One Silver Laced (my smallest, slowest feathering chick) and one Blue Laced Red (my largest chick). Oreo is my SLW, but I call “her” Indiana Solo cause even as a teeny tiny runt when we first got the chicks, “she’s” the first one to go off any explore, the snatcher of all the foods, the stand as tall as I can, whatchyoulookinat chick. I think she’s a he.... Compared to the Blue Laced Red, who is twice as big, Oreo’s comb is darker and wattle more pronounced. Is there any truth to feather growth - slow for male, faster for female? It’d fit the bill if this little ones a roo.
I will post pictures of these chickies if they’re wanted. But may have to wait until a more appropriate hour as my phone is failing to download images from iCloud (so pictures from when they were younger). We got them 6/9. I think Oreo (SLW) and 3 others were only 1-3 days old, Diamond (BLRW) was around a week or more maybe and Moony was somewhere in between.
