You can separate them, but then what?
I don't separate unless a particular male isn't going to be returning to their group.
It doesn't happen often but knowing the difference between a fight to the death and status scraps can be helpful.
A lot will depend on how much room your chickens have to escape any aggression.
At some point if they can't resolve their differences you're going to have to do it for them.
I patch them up and leave them to it.
This is what I use for most wounds. It stops further pecking at the wound and seals it.
