Rooster Hen

I have read that holding a chicken upside down can cause their lungs to collapse. And to add submerging them in water to that? Damn. No animal deserves that. I could never...

Aren’t you the OP that thought your rooster was a trans ?

I just did some research and could not find any information to match your statement. I have read that holding an aggressive rooster by the legs does no harm whatsoever to them and it also prevents them from scratching and pecking at you.

Hanging a chicken upside down by the legs for a long period of time can damage its lungs but holding it by the legs for 5 seconds while you dunk him in water shouldn’t effect him in the slightest.

I would start looking up articles now on how to interact/train cockerels and roosters. He should not see you as any kind of threat to himself or the pullet so he doesn't need to protect against you. My rooster has never pecked me or shown any human aggression. Sometimes when I pick up one of the girls she will protest (don't cuddle my chickens) and he will come running. Once he sees it's me he stops in his tracks. He'll just wait near by until I put her down and then he'll check on her. Only chickens that ever peck me are the hens and they get pecked right back until they leave my space (finger poke to the head, just hard enough to notice not to hurt).

He needs some training to learn what behavior you find acceptable. Don't wait until he is out of control to change how you interact with him. There are tons of suggestions here on BYC so I'm sure you can find a method you are comfortable with.

I also suggest you look into getting more girls. Preferably some the same age or older.

I'll have to look for it. I came across it somewhere. I figure if there is a chance it is true, I would rather just not do it. Somewhere else in the past someone had said, I think on this website, that some of their chickens didn't last long after someone did this. I haven't looked into it further though since I just wasn't going to do it.

That might be me. I didn't necessarily think he was. All I knew was that I purchase what was supposed to be two female chicks, and when one started to seem like a rooster I figured that I either unknowingly bought a rooster or that what some other ppl told me happens with some hens without a rooster could be happening to mine - however mine is to young to take on the rooster characteristics for that type of situation. I now know I have a rooster. And my chicken is not even the breed the store said he was either. Lots of surprises for a first time chicken owner within the past week so I was looking for any insight or resources others could guide me too. All is well and now I have to learn how to deal with a rooster!
