rooster indeed?

No, certainly not all roosters are mean. I only mentioned the mean rooster in our lives right now because the behavior started off seemingly innocent and then escalated. I want the OP to be aware and not tolerate aggression as "not that bad" or "just acting like a rooster" until someone is seriously injured.

I don't know what the mean:docile rooster ratio might be but I can tell you that my EE cockerel (30-some weeks old) is thus far a mild-mannered guy and a fine example of how a rooster can be effective without being aggressive. I'm fairly certain his behavior is just the sort of guy he is but since you asked... I don't snuggle my rooster. He doesn't want to be held, I don't force it. I tidbit him (give him food by hand) and he always takes it and usually passes it along to the girls. He's never challenged me so I haven't had to use any rooster psychology on him.

He's a cute and grown rooster. I'll bet he's crowing and lookin' for the ladies! Those Easter Egger girls are so cute with that little muff and those winkin' eyes and fluffy butts!!!! Ever seen one in the nest box?? They're so coy...looking at you with that muff before they drop that pretty blue-green egg!!

I hope you live somewhere that roosters are allowed.

Generally if you treat your flock well (translation: FOOD and also preferably frequent visits to henhouse) the roosters will be nice as long as there is only 1 rooster per every 6 or more hens. I definitely don't snuggle adult roosters??!! I don't pick them up or anything. I DO talk to them and sometimes let out a good ol' Ur-Urrrr!!! just to let them know who's the Head Ruthster around here....

The popularity of backyard chickens implies that the ability to identify rooster chicks < 8 weeks is a good skill to have.

tumblr and I thank you!

oh yeah, I do live where roosters are allowed as long as they are not obnoxious.I am excited to learn about rooster psychology!

We bought 2 baby chicks this spring and one turned out to be a rooster. He is just as gentle as the hens, has a great lively personality, and is not aggressive at all. My 10 year old catches him, them sings to him while he lays his head in her lap. We live in a subdivision in the county. We would have never bought a rooster, but I am glad we have him, he is our favorite. Good luck!!

I agree very pretty EE Rooster, It would sure save alot of BYC posters alot of typing time if the feedstores and the hatcherys would just sale them as EE's

Don't matter to me cause I love the EE's no matter what the hatcheries call em!!
