Hello chicken keepers.
Last night I noticed our rooster standing in the corner wobbling. We picked him up, his eyes were looking dirty and closed. He was breathing through his beak. Not sure if related, but he never re grow tail after last year moult. Which I found suspicious.
We isolated him. So this morning he never left the perch. Doesn't open eyes. But crowing as normal.
I understand chicken illnesses its a guess work. But maybe someone had same experience and knows what can it be?
He is about 3 yo.

Do you have other roosters? It looks like you had another in a previous thread. Molting is a bit hard on all chickens, and I have seen my head rooster bullied by his flock during the weakest times. A junior cockerel will even try to run him off. His tail feathers may have been pulled out as the new ones came in. I would make sure that he is eating a balanced feed with extra protein, and add a good poultry vitamin. Egg or tuna can be a healthy treat. Look him over for any mites or lice. Consider worming him with SafeGuard or Valbazen. Have you seen any diseases with your other chickens in the past?

Haven't had anything like that in other chickens. Yes I do have another roo, but its the boss one is ill, he usually bullied another cockerel

Can you open his left eye and look inside for any bubbles or foam? It looks he may have some crusty drainage under the eye. How is the ventilation inside your coop, and is there an ammonia odor from the bedding? Overhead ventilation from one end to the other, but no direct wind, is good. Chickens have sensitive respiratory systems, and poor ventilation, dust, ammonia odor, and mold are often responsible for illnesses in chickens. I don’t recommend separating him from the flock if you have another rooster, but you could cage him inside the coop in a dog crate wiping food and water, to protect him from feather picking until he completes his molt or gets stronger.

We have nestera coops with correct ventilation. Weather is brutal for them this winter. Sub zero, then warm. Then sub zero again. Sometimes they pack in one coop so its a bit crowded. But we clean it regularly, every 3 days or so. Shouldn't be building up too much ammonia

Hey! I recently had a hen with this same eye thing pop up, after the research i tried to do i came to the conclusion it was a respiratory infection called mycoplasma. It is said to be contagious so i isolated my hen in a room inside our house and it said to give them electolytes, so i got this electrolyte powder for poultry and mixed that with water for her. I had to help her drink of course cause she couldnt really open her eye, but after about a week of just her being secluded and giving her electrolytes in her water seemed to heal!
