Hello BYC family. I met a rooster who doesn't crow today. Never has. He is a lavender orpington a tad over 1 year old. Does anyone have experience with this? Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm very curious about it. I'm considering adopting him, I love boys but can't have any due to codes/crowing. But I think one who doesn't crow will be just fine. Just curious if this is a thing or what...

Thanks all!!

It's perfectly fine for a rooster to prefer not to crow. Are you sure the bird you're looking at is a roo?
Yes. Has spurs and never laid an egg, and saddle feathers, so I think the assumption is "yes", anyway. I've just never heard of one never crowing. Do you think it would change around a bunch of girls (5)?

Do you have photos of him?
Do you personally know the people who have him now?
How is he currently kept/housed and is he the only chicken that these people have?

If roosters are against code then I wouldn't adopt him and grow attached to a bird you will likely need to part with sooner rather than later. Zoning/codes/ordinances don't generally say things like non-crowing roosters are permitted. The way I look at it is that you don't want to draw any negative attention to your flock by neighbors and risk having to part with your rooster and possibly more since you have violated the rules.

Sub roosters whom are lower in the pecking order don’t crow. Some never frow at all. It took 8 months for my Orp. Mix to crow, so that too still has a good change that he might crow one day
Ok, I was thinking this might happen. Don't want to commit to a bird that I'd have to give to another home if he decides to crow one day..

Yeah, but they're against the ordinance because they crow, but I get what your saying

I have a two year old rooster and a one year old rooster, both in completely different pens, who have never crowed. They're the sweetest chickens I own. The one is an omega in the pecking order, but the other is housed alone with a single hen and has never tried to mount her. I'm thinking he may fancy other roosters over hens ;)

One thing I worry in your situation is he will feel the need to become the alpha and start crowing for you. Especially if his current owners have other roosters. If he suddenly is the only man of the flock, he may go nuts and you'll have to give him up. I really cannot say, roosters are very puzzling sometimes.
